Chương 6

But he did not know the whole story.

He did not know what happened before.

He did not know what happened after.

“I am not judging you because I know everything,” he said.

“I am judging what I saw.”

Camilla looked disappointed.

Not hurt.

Disappointed.

As if he had failed an expectation she had never spoken aloud.

“That is exactly why you are dangerous.”

Enzo frowned.

“What?”

“You think you are being fair.”

The words landed harder than he expected.

“You walk into a room, see something ugly, and decide you are the only person willing to act.”

“That is not what happened.”

“Isn’t it?”

She smiled without humor.

“You spent years ignoring problems because they were inconvenient.”

He did not answer.

Because she was right about that.

Not completely.

But enough.

Camilla noticed.

“You know I am right.”

“About some things.”

The answer irritated her more than denial would have.

“Always like that.”

“Like what?”

“Trying to be reasonable.”

She laughed softly.

“You think it makes you better.”

“No.”

“You do.”

Enzo looked at her.

The strange thing was that part of him recognized the person standing there.

Not the woman from the corridor.

Not the woman holding the crop.

The woman he had met years earlier when she was younger and less certain of herself.

Before money had turned every mistake into something someone else could clean up.

Before every apology had become a negotiation.

Before she learned that being feared was easier than being vulnerable.

But understanding someone did not mean excusing them.

That was the lesson he had avoided for too long.

“Why did you do it?” he asked.

Camilla’s face hardened.

“Do what?”

“Humiliate her.”

“She disrespected me.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the truth.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“It is the reason you tell yourself.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Camilla looked down.

A small movement.

Almost invisible.

“I was embarrassed.”

The honesty surprised him.

“She embarrassed me.”

“By taking a glass?”

Camilla’s jaw tightened.

“It was not just the glass.”

“What was it?”

She did not answer immediately.

The mansion felt unusually large around them.

Every empty hallway seemed to carry pieces of conversations that had ended.

“She made me look weak.”

Enzo stared at her.

“She removed a drink from your hand.”

“She corrected me.”

There it was.

The real issue.

Not the glass.

Not the party.

Not the servants.

Control.

“She corrected you.”

Camilla crossed her arms.

“In front of people.”

Enzo let out a quiet breath.

“You understand that sounds worse when you say it out loud.”

“I know how it sounds.”

“Do you?”

She looked away.

For several seconds, the only sound was the distant movement of staff cleaning the kitchen.

“I cannot lose everything because of one mistake,” she said.

The sentence changed the conversation.

Enzo noticed.

“What do you mean?”

Camilla did not answer.

“Camilla.”

She looked toward the hallway.

Then back at him.

“You think tonight was about a maid.”

“It was.”

“No.”

Her voice dropped.

“It was about everything falling apart.”

He waited.

She rubbed her fingers together nervously.

A habit he had seen before but never understood.

“My father built his entire reputation around this engagement.”

“That is not my responsibility.”

“I know.”

The response came quickly.

Too quickly.

That made him listen.

“I know.”

She swallowed.

“But if this ends badly, there are consequences.”

“What consequences?”

She looked at him.

For the first time all night, she looked genuinely afraid.

“More than you think.”

Enzo’s phone remained in his hand.

The screen had gone dark.

He did not notice.

“What are you talking about?”

Camilla walked toward a nearby table and picked up a glass of water.

Her hand shook slightly.

“I should not tell you.”

“Then why start?”

“Because you should know.”

The contradiction was typical of her.

Even now, even frightened, she wanted control over the information.

She wanted to choose the moment.

She wanted to choose how much damage the truth caused.

“Your security chief has the footage,” Enzo said.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he was hired to protect me.”

“That does not explain why he kept it.”

Camilla looked down.

“No.”

The answer was quiet.

“Because he was not protecting me.”

A silence followed.

Enzo felt the first real shift of the night.

The feeling that the scene in the corridor was connected to something larger.

Not because of a secret waiting to be revealed.

Because people rarely reached a breaking point from one single moment.

There were usually smaller moments before.

Ignored warnings.

Excused behavior.

Things people noticed and chose not to name.

“What has he been protecting you from?” Enzo asked.

Camilla looked at him.

And for once, she did not have an immediate answer.

That frightened him more than anything she had said.

“What has he been protecting you from?” Enzo asked.

Camilla looked at him.

And for once, she did not have an immediate answer.

That frightened him more than anything she had said.

The silence stretched between them until the sound of a cleaning cart moving somewhere down the hallway interrupted it.

Camilla looked toward the doorway.

“I need to speak with you somewhere private.”

Enzo almost refused.

The instinct was there.

After everything that had happened, privacy felt like another place where things could be hidden.

But he also knew that public anger rarely produced truth.

“Five minutes,” he said.

She nodded.

They walked into the smaller sitting room beside the library.

The room had always been one of Enzo’s favorite places in the mansion because almost nobody used it.

There were no photographs of important people.

No expensive decorations meant to impress visitors.

Just old books, worn leather chairs, and a small table where someone had left a half-finished crossword puzzle.

Camilla closed the door behind them.

She did not sit.

Neither did he.

“I did not know this would happen,” she said.

Enzo watched her carefully.

“What would happen?”

May you like

“That you would see.”

The honesty made him pause.
