Chương 6

"I was a nurse at the hospital where Lily was born," Evelyn said.

Sylvester listened.

"I worked nights."

Her fingers moved around the edge of her cup.

"That was when I noticed things."

"What things?" Daniel asked.

Evelyn looked at him carefully.

"You were young."

The statement sounded almost like forgiveness.

That bothered Daniel.

He did not want forgiveness yet.

"I was there," Evelyn continued.

"When Lily's mother, Claire, gave birth."

The name changed the room.

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

He had not heard it spoken in years.

"She loved that baby."

Evelyn looked toward Sylvester.

"That part matters."

Sylvester nodded.

"She loved her."

"Yes."

Evelyn took a breath.

"Claire was scared, though."

"Of what?"

Sylvester asked.

Evelyn hesitated.

"Of Margaret."

Daniel looked up.

"My mother?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Claire told me she felt watched."

Daniel frowned.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It did to Claire."

Evelyn reached toward a drawer and pulled out a small envelope.

"I kept this because I didn't know what else to do."

Sylvester did not touch it.

"What is it?"

"A letter."

"From Claire?"

Evelyn nodded.

"She asked me to give it to someone she trusted if anything happened."

Daniel stepped closer.

"What happened?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"That depends on what you mean."

The answer unsettled him.

"She left," Daniel said.

Evelyn's expression changed.

"No."

The single word carried years of frustration.

"She was forced out."

Sylvester remained still.

"Explain."

Evelyn looked down.

"After Claire left the hospital, Margaret came to see her."

Daniel shook his head.

"My mother helped her."

"That is what she told you."

The room became silent.

Evelyn continued carefully.

"Claire called me three days later."

"What did she say?"

"She said Margaret threatened to take Lily away."

Daniel's face lost color.

"She wouldn't."

Evelyn did not argue.

She simply looked at him.

That was worse.

Because she was not trying to convince him.

She was letting him decide whether he believed his own memory or the evidence in front of him.

Sylvester picked up the envelope.

It was old.

The edges were worn.

Someone had held it many times.

But never opened it.

"Why keep it?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"Because Claire never came back."

The answer was quiet.

"After a while, I stopped knowing whether I was protecting her privacy or protecting my own fear."

Nobody spoke.

Outside, a car alarm sounded briefly before shutting off.

A child laughed somewhere in the hallway.

Life continued around them.

Sylvester opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was a single folded letter.

The handwriting was uneven.

Not because the writer lacked confidence.

Because the person writing it was afraid.

Daniel moved closer.

Sylvester read the first line silently.

Then his expression changed.

"What?"

Daniel asked.

Sylvester looked at him.

The words in the letter were not an accusation.

They were worse.

They were a warning.

"Claire wrote that if anything happened to her, Lily should never be left alone with Margaret."

Daniel stepped back.

The sentence seemed impossible.

But impossible things became possible when enough people ignored them.

Sylvester folded the paper.

"We need to know where Claire is."

Evelyn looked down.

"I tried."

"How?"

"I searched records."

"And?"

She hesitated.

"Her trail ends."

Daniel stared.

"People don't just disappear."

Evelyn looked at him.

"They do when powerful people decide nobody should look."

The words remained in the room.

And for the first time since entering the apartment, Daniel understood something.

The problem was not only that he had failed Lily.

The problem was that he had helped build the silence around her.

Daniel did not speak for a long time.

The apartment seemed smaller with every second that passed.

The walls were covered with ordinary things.

A calendar from a local grocery store.

A stack of old magazines.

A small plant near the window that looked like it had been saved from dying several times.

Nothing about the room matched the size of the truth sitting inside it.

"I need to see that letter," Daniel said.

Sylvester looked at him.

"You do."

It was not an invitation.

It was a statement.

Daniel understood.

He had spent years asking people to trust his intentions while ignoring the results of his choices.

Now intentions meant very little.

Sylvester handed him the paper.

Daniel held it carefully, almost afraid that touching it would make the words more real.

His eyes moved across the handwriting.

The first few lines were difficult to read.

Then he reached the part that changed everything.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then I was not able to come back the way I promised.

Please do not believe everything they tell you.

I did not leave because I stopped loving Lily.

I left because I was afraid I would lose her forever.

Daniel's breathing changed.

He sat down slowly.

Evelyn watched him without judgment.

That almost made it harder.

If she had been angry, he could have defended himself.

If she had blamed him, he could have argued.

But she simply allowed him to sit with what he had done.

Sylvester looked away, giving him a moment of privacy.

The older man had learned that some pain needed witnesses.

Some pain needed silence.

After several minutes, Daniel folded the letter.

"Where is she?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"I don't know."

"You said you knew."

"I said I knew she didn't vanish."

Daniel looked frustrated.

"That's not enough."

"No."

Evelyn's voice remained calm.

"It isn't."

She reached for another folder on the table.

"This is everything I collected."

Inside were copies of documents.

Old medical records.

A few handwritten notes.

A photograph of Claire standing outside a small apartment building.

Nothing proved exactly what happened.

But together, the pieces created a pattern.

Sylvester examined the papers carefully.

He noticed something immediately.

A date on one document did not match another.

The difference was only two days.

Most people would have ignored it.

He did not.

"Why is this date changed?"

Evelyn looked surprised.

"I never noticed."

May you like

Sylvester tapped the page.

"Someone did."
