Chương 1

"""The little girl's scream had already cracked across the marble terrace before anyone admitted something was terribly wrong.

Lily Harper clutched the tiny silver bracelet around her wrist with both hands while tears ran down her cheeks and her stepmother pulled at the other end.

"Give it to your sister," Victoria said through clenched teeth, keeping her voice low as if speaking softly could make the cruelty disappear.

The bracelet barely weighed anything, but to the three-year-old child it felt like the last piece of her mother that still belonged to her.

"No," Lily sobbed.

Her small fingers tightened until her knuckles turned pale.

"Mommy gave me this."

Behind her, Daniel Harper kept one hand gently but firmly on his daughter's shoulders, preventing her from stepping away.

"Stop being selfish, Lily," he said.

The words sounded rehearsed, like something he had repeated to himself before saying it aloud.

Lily looked up at him with a confusion deeper than fear.

"Grandpa," she cried.

Her voice carried across the terrace and toward the tall iron gate at the end of the garden.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The luxury mansion remained quiet except for the distant sound of sprinklers watering the perfectly trimmed lawn and the faint clinking of dishes from the kitchen staff preparing lunch inside.

Victoria glanced toward the gate, then back at the child.

She had always been good at controlling rooms.

She knew how to smile when cameras were around, how to choose expensive clothes that made people underestimate her, and how to make a request sound like it was already a decision everyone had agreed to.

But Lily's scream had done something she could not control.

It had made the moment visible.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

His jaw tightened, and he looked away from his daughter's face.

He hated scenes.

He hated embarrassment.

He hated anything that made the perfect life he had built appear less perfect.

The bracelet had become a problem because Victoria's daughter, Emma, had seen it earlier that morning and asked why she did not have one.

Victoria had answered the way she answered most things.

She promised she would fix it.

Then she decided taking Lily's bracelet was easier than explaining why some things could not be replaced.

Daniel had not expected Lily to fight.

He had underestimated how much a child could understand about losing something.

The gate opened with a heavy metallic sound.

Nobody in the family noticed the gardener stepping aside or the two black vehicles stopping outside the entrance.

The first person through the gate was not someone who needed permission to enter.

Richard Stallone walked slowly across the stone path with two large men following behind him.

At seventy years old, he moved with the confidence of someone who had spent decades watching people reveal themselves under pressure.

He wore a white open-collar shirt beneath a black tailored suit and a dark overcoat despite the warm afternoon.

A gold ring rested on his right hand.

People in the city knew many versions of Richard Stallone.

Some called him a businessman.

Others whispered different names.

Lily only knew one thing.

He was Grandpa.

Richard stopped when he saw his granddaughter crying.

The expression on his face did not change immediately.

That was what frightened people most about him.

He did not need to raise his voice to make a room quiet.

His eyes moved from Lily's wet cheeks to Daniel's hand on her shoulders, then to Victoria's fingers wrapped around the bracelet.

"Take your hands off my granddaughter," Richard said.

His voice was calm.

Not loud.

Not angry.

Just certain.

Daniel removed his hand first.

It happened almost without thought.

Victoria held on for another second.

Then she let go.

Lily immediately pulled the bracelet against her chest and ran toward Richard.

He bent down slowly and caught her before she could fall.

She buried her face against his coat.

"Grandpa," she whispered.

"I know," he said.

It was the only answer he gave.

Victoria recovered faster than Daniel.

She stepped forward, smoothing her dress as if fixing the fabric could restore her control.

"You don't decide what happens in this house," she said.

Richard looked at her.

For a second, the only sound was the fountain in the garden.

"You are right about one thing," he replied.

Victoria waited.

"This is not my house."

Her confidence returned slightly.

"Exactly."

Richard's expression remained unchanged.

"But she is my granddaughter."

The sentence landed harder than a shout.

Victoria opened her mouth to respond.

She never finished.

The slap came quickly.

The sound echoed beneath the covered terrace.

Victoria stumbled backward in shock, losing her balance and falling onto the patio sofa behind her.

Daniel froze.

He had seen his father-in-law angry before.

He had never seen him move.

The two bodyguards behind Richard did not react.

They simply stood there, silent and watchful.

Victoria touched her cheek.

The disbelief on her face was almost stronger than the pain.

Nobody had ever treated her that way.

Not because she was respected.

Because people around her were afraid of what she could do afterward.

"You hit me," she whispered.

Richard looked down at Lily, who was still holding his coat.

"I stopped someone from hurting a child."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Do you even hear yourself?"

His voice shook between anger and humiliation.

"You come here, you attack my wife, and you think you can just take my daughter?"

Richard turned toward him.

Daniel had always wanted to be the strongest person in every room.

He had inherited his father's money but never his father's patience.

He wanted respect without having to carry the weight that came with it.

"Your daughter was standing in front of you crying," Richard said.

Daniel swallowed.

"You think I don't care about her?"

"I think you cared more about keeping peace with your wife than protecting your child."

The accusation hurt because Daniel did not have an immediate answer.

May you like

His eyes moved toward Lily.

She was no longer crying loudly.
