Chương 4

Fear belonged to moments when the future was unclear.

This was something different.

This was the feeling of knowing a conversation had been waiting for years.

When Daniel arrived, he did not come inside immediately.

He stood on the porch with his hands in his jacket pockets.

Stallone noticed the hesitation.

That was unusual.

Daniel was not a man who hesitated often.

“What happened?” Stallone asked.

Daniel looked past him into the house.

“Is she okay?”

“Yes.”

“She sleep?”

“Yes.”

Daniel nodded.

Neither man moved.

The porch suddenly felt smaller than it had before.

“I shouldn’t have pushed you,” Daniel said.

Stallone studied him.

It was not an apology.

Not exactly.

But it was the closest Daniel had come.

“I shouldn’t have hit you,” Stallone replied.

Daniel looked up.

The admission surprised him.

“You mean that?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you?”

Stallone looked toward the driveway.

A few leaves moved across the concrete.

“Because I saw myself.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I saw the man I used to be.”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I’m not you.”

“No.”

Stallone shook his head.

“You’re worse in one way.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“And better in another.”

The anger returned slightly.

“You really know how to make a compliment sound terrible.”

A small smile almost appeared on Stallone’s face.

Almost.

“That’s a talent I’ve had for a long time.”

Daniel looked away.

For a moment, they were not father and son arguing.

They were two men who did not know how to speak to each other without turning everything into a competition.

“I was angry,” Daniel said.

“I know.”

“She wouldn’t stop crying.”

“I know.”

“I felt like nothing I did mattered.”

The honesty changed the air.

Stallone leaned against the doorframe.

“Why didn’t you tell me that?”

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Because you would have told me I was doing something wrong.”

Stallone did not answer.

Because that was possible.

More than possible.

It was true.

For years, Daniel had avoided asking for help because he believed help would come with judgment.

And Stallone had spent years offering advice because he believed advice was the same thing as love.

Neither man had noticed the difference.

Inside, Grace dropped a crayon.

The sound made both of them turn.

The instinct was immediate.

Both wanted to check on her.

Both stopped.

Daniel noticed.

“You changed.”

Stallone looked back.

“What?”

“You used to walk into every room like you owned it.”

The old man looked down.

“Maybe I finally learned I didn’t.”

Daniel looked through the doorway.

Grace was still sitting at the table.

She had not heard them.

“She likes that rabbit?”

“Yes.”

“It was mine.”

Stallone looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel pointed.

“The rabbit.”

He swallowed.

“I had it when I was little.”

A strange sadness crossed his face.

“I thought it was gone.”

Stallone remembered.

The rabbit had been packed away after Daniel’s mother died.

A small thing among thousands of other things.

Somehow it had survived.

“I found it last night.”

Daniel nodded.

“I used to sleep with that thing after Mom got sick.”

The sentence came out quietly.

Like he had not planned to say it.

Stallone felt something shift.

There were pieces of his son he had never seen.

Not because they were hidden.

Because neither of them had ever looked.

“Daniel.”

His son interrupted.

“I know what you’re going to say.”

“Do you?”

“You’re going to say I need to be better.”

Stallone looked at him.

“No.”

Daniel waited.

“I was going to say you need to be honest.”

The younger man looked confused.

“With who?”

“Yourself first.”

Daniel looked down.

The silence stretched.

Then the front door opened behind them.

Grace stood there holding the rabbit.

“Daddy?”

Daniel froze.

She looked smaller than she had yesterday.

Not physically.

Something else.

Like she was waiting to find out which version of him would answer.

He immediately lowered himself to her height.

“Hey.”

She did not run to him.

That hurt.

Stallone saw it.

Daniel saw it too.

A few months earlier, he would have blamed someone else.

Now he just looked sad.

“Can I have a hug?”

Grace looked at Stallone.

Then at Daniel.

The pause lasted only a few seconds.

But it felt much longer.

Finally, she stepped forward.

Daniel wrapped his arms around her carefully.

Like he was holding something fragile.

Because he was.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Grace did not respond.

She simply held the rabbit between them.

It was not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But it was a beginning.

Vanessa arrived an hour later.

She came without the confidence she had carried into the backyard.

She parked her car and sat inside for almost five minutes before getting out.

Stallone watched from the window.

He noticed that she checked her reflection in the mirror before walking toward the house.

Even now, image mattered to her.

Maybe especially now.

When she reached the door, she stopped.

Daniel opened it.

Neither spoke.

Finally, Vanessa said, “I talked to someone.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Who?”

“A counselor.”

The answer seemed to embarrass her.

“I know that sounds dramatic.”

“It doesn’t.”

She looked past him.

“Is Grace here?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa nodded.

Her fingers tightened around her purse strap.

“I need to apologize.”

Daniel did not move.

“Do you understand what you did?”

Her eyes dropped.

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

Daniel noticed.

“So you understand why it was wrong?”

Vanessa took a breath.

“I understand that I was angry.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

She looked at him.

For the first time, she did not try to defend herself.

“I scared her.”

The words seemed difficult to say.

“I scared a child because I wanted to feel in control.”

Daniel looked away.

Because that sentence was also about him.

Not just her.

Inside the house, Grace sat at the kitchen table with her crayons.

The adults stood in the doorway.

Nobody entered.

May you like

Nobody forced a moment that was not ready.

Some damage could not be fixed by one apology.
