Chương 13
She lowered her voice.
“The footage is not the problem.”
Anna looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.
When she opened them, the anger was still there, but something underneath it had changed.
Fear.
Frank had seen that fear in the kitchen before she left.
Now it was stronger.
Evelyn said, “There are records.”
Daniel frowned.
“What records?”
She looked at him.
“Your father’s.”
Daniel went completely still.
Anna said, “What about him?”
Evelyn pressed her lips together.
Frank watched her struggle with the answer.
Not because she did not know it.
Because saying it would cost her.
Finally she looked at Anna.
“The watch was not the only thing I lied about.”
Nobody moved.
From upstairs, Lily called for her mother.
Anna did not answer immediately.
Evelyn looked toward the ceiling.
Then back at them.
“I told you your father left because he chose another woman.”
Daniel’s face lost color.
Anna whispered, “He did.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
Frank felt the entire house seem to narrow around the word.
Anna stared at her mother.
“Then why did he leave?”
Evelyn looked at Daniel first.
That was the mistake.
Anna saw it.
So did Frank.
Daniel stepped backward.
“Mom.”
Evelyn’s eyes filled, but her voice stayed controlled.
“He didn’t leave.”
Anna’s hand gripped the edge of the door.
Evelyn said, “I made him go.”
Anna stared at her mother as though the doorway had become something she could not cross.
Daniel was the first to speak.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“It means your father did not abandon you.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“That is not what you said.”
“I know.”
“You said he left us.”
“I know.”
“You said he chose someone else.”
“I know.”
His voice rose.
“You said he didn’t want the responsibility.”
Evelyn flinched.
Anna closed the front door behind her mother.
Not to welcome her.
To keep the conversation out of the street.
Lily called again from upstairs.
“Mommy?”
Anna looked toward the ceiling.
“I’ll be there in a minute, sweetheart.”
Evelyn said, “You should go to her.”
Anna turned.
“No.”
“Anna.”
“No more deciding when I get to hear things.”
Evelyn looked down.
Frank stayed near the kitchen entrance.
Every instinct in him wanted the missing facts immediately.
He kept silent.
Daniel did not.
“What did you do?”
Evelyn walked to the dining table and sat.
She seemed smaller without the posture she had been carrying all afternoon.
“He wanted a divorce.”
Daniel laughed once.
“So you made him leave.”
“He was going to leave anyway.”
“That is not an answer.”
Evelyn pressed her fingertips to her forehead.
“He found someone.”
Anna’s jaw tightened.
“So there was another woman.”
“No.”
Evelyn looked up.
“He met someone after.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You changed the order.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I was humiliated.”
The word sat oddly in the room.
Too ordinary for what it had done.
Evelyn continued.
“He told me he could not live with me anymore.”
Anna said, “Why?”
Evelyn almost answered quickly.
Then stopped herself.
“I controlled everything.”
Frank felt the sentence before he understood why.
Evelyn gave a small, bitter smile.
“I controlled the accounts, the house, the children’s schedules, who we saw, where we went.”
Daniel said, “You still do.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
That silenced him.
Evelyn folded her hands together.
“Your father had been talking to an attorney.”
Anna said, “And?”
“I found the paperwork.”
“What paperwork?”
“A draft custody proposal.”
Daniel went pale.
Evelyn looked at him.
“He wanted shared custody.”
Daniel whispered, “Okay.”
“I believed he would take you both.”
Anna said, “Shared custody isn’t taking us.”
“I know that now.”
“Did you know it then?”
Evelyn looked away.
“I knew what I wanted to know.”
Frank shifted his weight.
That answer he understood too well.
Evelyn continued.
“I told him if he fought me, I would make sure everyone believed he was unstable.”
Daniel frowned.
“Was he?”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
Anna sat down.
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“I told him I would say he had frightened you.”
Anna’s face changed.
“You used us.”
Evelyn whispered, “Yes.”
Daniel looked sick.
“And he left.”
“He agreed not to fight.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed fighting would hurt you.”
Daniel stood abruptly.
“That makes no sense.”
“It made sense to him.”
“No.”
“He was exhausted.”
“No.”
“Daniel.”
“You do not get to make him noble now.”
Evelyn looked at her son.
Daniel pointed toward her.
“You spent years telling us he didn’t want us.”
“I know.”
“You trained me to hate him.”
“I know.”
“You let him die with me thinking that.”
Evelyn covered her mouth.
The sound she made was small.
Anna stared at the table.
Frank could hear the refrigerator running in the kitchen.
A truck passed outside.
Lily began singing upstairs.
The normal world continued without permission.
Anna said, “What records?”
Evelyn lowered her hand.
“He kept copies.”
“Of what?”
“Emails.”
“To you?”
“Yes.”
“About custody?”
“Yes.”
Daniel whispered, “Where?”
“In a storage box.”
Anna looked at her mother.
“You have them?”
Evelyn nodded.
“Why?”
“I couldn’t throw them away.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Sentimental.”
Evelyn took it.
Frank expected her to defend herself.
She did not.
“I read them sometimes.”
Anna stared.
“You read the emails where he asked to see us.”
“Yes.”
“And then you told us he didn’t care.”
Evelyn’s face collapsed.
“Yes.”
Daniel turned away.
He put both hands on the counter and lowered his head.
Anna stood.
For one second Frank thought she might strike her mother.
Instead she walked upstairs.
Evelyn looked at Frank.
“Go after her.”
“No.”
“She needs someone.”
“She needs to choose who.”
Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.
Then she nodded.
Daniel stayed facing the counter.
Frank sat across from Evelyn.
“Why tell them now?”
She wiped beneath one eye.
“Because the police asked questions.”
Frank waited.
“And?”
“And I thought about giving them the records.”
May you like
“For what purpose?”
“To show that you have always been dangerous.”
