Chương 3

He could say of course not.

He could make the moment disappear.

But something about the room stopped him.

Maybe it was Michael sitting there.

Maybe it was the way Lily was waiting.

Maybe it was the fact that he had spent the entire day pretending not to see something he could no longer ignore.

“I was mad,” he admitted.

Lily's face changed.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

A small movement around her eyes.

Daniel saw it.

And he hated himself for seeing it too late.

“I shouldn't have been,” he said.

Michael looked away.

That small gesture meant more than criticism.

It meant he was giving Daniel a chance to say the words himself.

Daniel sat on the edge of the bed.

“I thought I was teaching you something.”

Lily stayed quiet.

“But I was wrong.”

She looked at him.

“Daddy?”

“Yeah?”

“Did I make you angry because I spilled water?”

Daniel felt his throat tighten.

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“You spilled water.”

He paused.

“That happens.”

“Then why?”

There it was.

The question he had been avoiding.

Why.

Not what happened.

Not who was right.

Why.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

“I don't know.”

It was not the answer a child wanted.

But it was the answer he had.

Michael watched him carefully.

A few months earlier, he would have called that weakness.

Now he wondered if admitting uncertainty was the first honest thing Daniel had done in years.

Lily slowly released Michael's finger.

Then she reached toward Daniel.

He leaned forward and picked her up.

She felt lighter than he remembered.

That scared him.

Because he wondered when he had stopped noticing.

Downstairs, Vanessa packed her purse.

She moved quickly.

Anger had replaced embarrassment.

She hated being the person who was wrong.

Especially in front of Michael.

Especially in front of Daniel.

She had spent years convincing herself that she was the only adult in the family willing to enforce rules.

She never asked why the children avoided her.

She never asked why Lily became quiet when she entered a room.

Those questions were uncomfortable.

So she avoided them.

Michael came downstairs carrying Lily.

Daniel followed.

Vanessa looked at them.

“You’re really going to make me the villain over this?”

Nobody answered immediately.

The silence irritated her.

“Seriously?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I don't know what to call it.”

Vanessa stared.

“What?”

“I don't know what happened today.”

She gave a short laugh.

“You don't know?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

That surprised her.

Because she expected him to defend her.

She expected him to fight.

Instead, he looked tired.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

“I know Lily was scared,” he said.

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“She cries over everything.”

Michael's eyes narrowed.

But Daniel spoke first.

“No.”

The word was quiet.

Vanessa looked at him.

“No?”

Daniel shook his head.

“She cried because she thought nobody would stop you.”

The backyard became still again.

Vanessa looked away.

For the first time, she did not have an immediate answer.

A phone buzzed on the counter.

Nobody moved.

It buzzed again.

Daniel glanced over.

The screen showed a notification from the family security system.

Motion detected.

He frowned.

“What is that?”

Michael looked toward the phone.

“The cameras.”

Daniel picked it up.

The backyard camera had recorded the entire incident.

His face changed.

Vanessa noticed.

“What?”

Daniel did not answer.

He opened the notification.

The video loaded.

And suddenly the afternoon was no longer a memory.

It was evidence.

They watched themselves on the small screen.

They watched Lily spill the water.

They watched Vanessa raise the ladle.

They watched Daniel stand there.

Silent.

The worst part was not what Vanessa did.

The worst part was the thirty seconds afterward.

The part where Daniel had done nothing.

Lily watched his face.

“Daddy?”

He turned off the phone.

But it was too late.

He had already seen himself.

And he knew he could never unsee it.

Daniel did not sleep that night.

He told himself he was staying awake because he needed to think.

That was the kind of explanation he usually gave himself when he wanted to avoid admitting something simpler.

He was afraid.

The house was quiet after midnight.

The expensive furniture.

The polished floors.

The framed photographs.

Everything that once represented success suddenly felt like evidence against him.

He sat alone at the kitchen island with the security footage paused on his laptop.

He had watched it too many times.

Not the moment Vanessa hit Lily.

Not the moment Michael entered.

The thirty seconds before.

The thirty seconds where Lily looked toward him.

Waiting.

Not screaming for him.

Not running to him.

Just waiting.

A child making a decision about whether the adult in front of her was safe.

Daniel closed the laptop.

His phone sat beside his hand.

Three missed calls from Vanessa.

Two messages.

The first said she was sorry things got out of control.

The second said they needed to talk before Michael ruined the family.

Daniel stared at the words for a long time.

Ruined the family.

The phrase bothered him.

Because a part of him still wanted to believe Michael was the problem.

It would have been easier.

A difficult father-in-law.

An aggressive older man.

Someone who had crossed a line.

Those things were true.

Michael had crossed a line.

But another truth sat beside it.

Daniel had crossed one first.

The next morning, Lily refused to eat breakfast.

She sat at the table wearing pajamas covered with small cartoon animals, moving pieces of cereal around the bowl with her spoon.

Daniel sat across from her.

Normally, he would have checked emails.

Normally, he would have answered calls.

Normally, he would have told himself that working was also taking care of his family.

Today, his phone stayed face down.

“Do you want pancakes?” he asked.

Lily shook her head.

“Toast?”

Another shake.

Daniel looked toward the window.

Outside, the backyard looked exactly the same.

May you like

The stools were still there.

The counter had been cleaned.
