Chương 7

“She was scared of thunderstorms.”

Her voice shook.

“She hated peas.”

A broken laugh escaped.

“She used to hide them in my plate because she knew I would get in trouble for not eating them.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

A human moment.

Small.

Unexpected.

“I never knew that.”

“Because nobody talked about normal things after she died.”

The room became quieter.

They were no longer talking about a doll.

They were talking about a little girl who had disappeared from their lives decades earlier.

And all the damage left behind.

Daniel looked at the floor.

“There was something else in the letter.”

Evelyn looked up.

“What?”

He hesitated.

Sylvester noticed.

This was the part Daniel had been afraid to say.

“What else?”

Daniel reached for the copy.

“At the end, my grandmother wrote that Claire left something for you.”

Evelyn frowned.

“What?”

“She said Claire wanted you to have the doll.”

The words seemed impossible.

Evelyn stopped breathing for a moment.

“She wanted me to have it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at the damaged doll sitting on the shelf across the room.

“Because she knew you were the one person who needed it.”

Evelyn stared at the doll.

The same doll she had damaged because she thought it represented everything she had lost.

But maybe it represented something else.

Something she had refused to see.

A little girl who loved her.

A sister who forgave her.

A memory that had survived longer than the anger.

Then Evelyn noticed something.

The doll was not on the shelf.

It was gone.

Sylvester looked around.

“Where is it?”

Nobody answered.

Daniel’s face changed.

“I thought Lucy had it.”

“She took it with her yesterday,” Sylvester said.

“No.”

Daniel shook his head slowly.

“Not that one.”

The room went still.

“What do you mean?” Evelyn asked.

Daniel looked at the empty shelf.

“There were two dolls.”

Daniel’s words stayed in the room.

“There were two dolls.”

Evelyn looked at him as if she had misheard.

“No.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“In the storage unit.”

Sylvester looked between them.

“Why didn’t you mention this before?”

Daniel rubbed his hand over his face.

“Because I thought it was just another thing my family forgot about.”

Evelyn stood still.

Her mind moved backward through years of memories.

She remembered Claire carrying the doll.

She remembered her mother putting boxes away after the funeral.

She remembered seeing one doll years later.

Or at least she thought she had.

“Where is the other one?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know.”

The answer immediately changed the atmosphere.

A missing letter was one thing.

A missing doll connected to the same secret was something else.

“When did you notice it was gone?” Sylvester asked.

Daniel looked at the shelf.

“When I went back after reading the letter.”

“Why go back?”

“Because the letter mentioned the doll.”

He hesitated.

“I wanted to see it.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“You knew?”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I knew there was something about Claire and the doll, but I did not know what.”

He looked toward the window.

“I thought maybe seeing it would help me understand why everyone in this family spent so much time avoiding the past.”

Sylvester walked toward the shelf.

“Was the second doll different?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“It looked almost the same.”

He paused.

“But there was one difference.”

“What?”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“The second doll had a red ribbon around its wrist.”

Evelyn’s face changed.

She sat down again.

A memory had appeared.

Not a complete one.

Just a piece.

A child’s hand.

A red ribbon.

A promise.

“What?” Sylvester asked.

Evelyn did not answer immediately.

Her eyes moved to the damaged doll Lucy had left behind in the house.

“She made two.”

Daniel looked surprised.

“Who?”

“Claire.”

Her voice was barely audible.

“She made two dolls.”

She closed her eyes.

“I forgot.”

The admission seemed to hurt her more than anything else she had said.

Sylvester waited.

“Tell us.”

Evelyn looked at the floor.

“After she got sick, she started making things.”

“What kind of things?”

“Little things.”

She swallowed.

“She said she wanted to leave pieces of herself behind.”

Nobody spoke.

“She made drawings.”

A pause.

“Bracelets.”

Another pause.

“And another doll.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Why?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Because she was afraid.”

The room became silent.

“She knew something was wrong before anyone told her.”

Daniel looked down.

Children often sensed what adults tried to hide.

“She gave one doll to me.”

Evelyn touched her chest.

“And she kept the other.”

Sylvester frowned.

“Why?”

Evelyn looked toward the stairs.

“Because she said one was for remembering.”

She took a breath.

“And one was for finding.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Finding what?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

The uncertainty bothered everyone.

Claire’s words had survived.

But their meaning had not.

Daniel stood.

“I need to show you something.”

He walked toward the hallway.

Evelyn followed slowly.

They entered a small room near the back of the house where old family items had been stored for years.

Daniel opened a cabinet.

Inside were more boxes.

“I found this after the letter.”

He pulled out a small wooden container.

“It was behind the photographs.”

Evelyn stared.

“I have never seen that.”

Daniel opened it.

Inside were several pieces of paper folded carefully.

Children’s drawings.

A small red ribbon.

And a note written in uneven handwriting.

Evelyn touched the paper but did not pick it up.

“Claire’s handwriting.”

Daniel handed it to her.

The note had only a few words.

For Evie.

When you are ready.

Evelyn’s hands started shaking.

Nobody had called her Evie in decades.

Not since childhood.

She sat down.

“She was the only one who called me that.”

Daniel looked away.

The pain on his face softened.

“What happened to that part of you?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“What?”

“The person who let someone call you that.”

The question had no accusation.

That made it harder.

May you like

“I don’t know.”

Daniel nodded.
