Chương 2
“I have to.”
Richard’s confidence disappeared.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain it.”
Richard opened his mouth but no words came out.
The room that had once belonged to him suddenly felt unfamiliar.
The decorations, the expensive furniture, the perfect Christmas arrangement, none of it could protect him anymore.
Ethan lifted the document higher.
“This is the record you buried.”
Richard’s face changed.
His eyes moved from the paper to Lily.
Then back to Ethan.
A painful realization crossed his expression.
The secret he had spent years hiding was finally standing in front of him.
The young man he had tried to silence was now the person revealing everything.
And the little girl he thought would never know the truth was watching him.
Richard took a slow step backward.
His breathing became uneven.
“What did you find?” one family member finally asked.
Ethan looked around the room.
His voice was calm, but every word carried the weight of years of pain.
“I found out that the story we were told was a lie.”
Richard’s face went pale.
The Christmas music playing softly in the background suddenly felt distant.
Ethan continued holding the document as everyone waited for the truth that would change their family forever.
Richard looked at the paper one more time.
Then he looked at Ethan.
And for the first time, the man who had always controlled every room he entered looked completely powerless.
Richard looked at the paper one more time.
Then he looked at Ethan.
And for the first time, the man who had always controlled every room he entered looked completely powerless.
The silence stretched until even the crackling fireplace seemed too loud.
Lily slowly tightened her grip around Ethan’s sleeve, sensing that whatever was written on that paper had changed everything.
Richard’s eyes moved across the faces of the people around the table.
For years, they had admired him.
They had trusted his decisions.
They had accepted every explanation he gave because he had always spoken with confidence and certainty.
But now that confidence was gone.
“What are you waiting for?” Richard finally asked.
His voice was quieter than before.
“Read it.”
Ethan studied him carefully.
He expected anger.
He expected another attack.
He expected Richard to try to destroy the evidence before anyone could hear the truth.
But instead, he saw fear.
Real fear.
And that frightened Ethan more than the anger ever had.
Because it meant Richard knew exactly what was inside that document.
Ethan unfolded the first page.
The sound of the paper moving seemed impossibly loud in the silent dining room.
“Twenty years ago,” Ethan began, “there was an accident that everyone was told was a tragedy.”
Richard closed his eyes for a moment.
“Don’t do this here.”
Ethan ignored him.
“There was a car crash on a winter night.”
Several people at the table looked at each other.
They knew the story.
Everyone in the family knew the story.
They had been told that Ethan’s mother had lost control of the vehicle because of the snow.
They had been told that nobody could have prevented what happened.
They had been told that some things were simply meant to happen.
But Ethan knew those words had always felt wrong.
“My mother didn’t lose control of that car,” Ethan said.
Richard’s expression tightened.
“She was forced off the road.”
A shocked whisper moved through the room.
Lily looked up at Ethan, confused by the sadness in his voice.
Richard stepped forward.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Ethan looked directly at him.
“The police report was changed.”
Richard froze.
“The original report disappeared.”
Another pause.
“And this document is the copy that was hidden.”
The older man’s face became pale.
Ethan continued.
“The witness statement, the financial records, and the private investigation all point to the same thing.”
Richard’s breathing became heavier.
“No.”
The word came out almost like a plea.
“You can’t prove that.”
Ethan looked down at the pages.
“I already did.”
The room seemed to shrink around them.
Outside the tall windows, snow continued falling over the dark garden.
The peaceful Christmas scene outside felt completely disconnected from the pain inside.
One of the relatives at the table finally stood.
“Richard, what is he saying?”
Richard did not answer.
His silence became the answer.
Ethan noticed it too.
For years, he had searched for proof.
He had searched through old records, forgotten files, and conversations people thought he would never hear.
But nothing prepared him for seeing the truth reflected on Richard’s face.
“You knew,” Ethan whispered.
Richard looked away.
“You knew what happened to my mother.”
The older man’s jaw tightened.
“Ethan.”
“No.”
Ethan’s voice cracked slightly.
“You don’t get to say my name like you care.”
Lily looked between them, frightened by the pain in Ethan’s voice.
The young man immediately noticed and lowered his tone.
He did not want her to carry the weight of the past.
Not like he had.
Richard saw that.
And something inside his expression changed.
“You think I wanted this?” Richard asked.
Ethan stared at him.
“You think I wanted to spend twenty years carrying this?”
Richard’s voice became more emotional.
“You have no idea what happened that night.”
“Then tell us.”
Richard looked around the room.
Everyone was waiting.
The man who had always had an answer for everything suddenly had nothing.
“I was trying to protect this family.”
Ethan almost laughed, but there was no humor in his expression.
“Protect us?”
He held up the document.
“You destroyed us.”
Richard’s shoulders lowered slightly.
The anger that had controlled him began to disappear.
In its place was exhaustion.
Regret.
And something close to shame.
Lily quietly asked, “Did you hurt Ethan’s mom?”
Her small voice stopped everyone.
Richard looked at her.
For a moment, he was not looking at an enemy.
He was looking at a child who wanted to understand why the adults around her were hurting each other.
Richard opened his mouth.
May you like
No answer came.
That silence hurt more than anything he could have said.
