Chương 6

“Is Uncle Evan in trouble?”

The question caught both adults off guard.

Mara looked at her.

“No, sweetheart.”

“Then why do you look sad?”

Mara opened her mouth.

Nothing came.

Daniel answered instead.

“Because sometimes people can love someone and still make mistakes.”

Lily considered that.

“Like when I spilled juice on my homework?”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Something like that.”

“But bigger?”

“Yes.”

She nodded like that made sense.

Then she returned to coloring.

The simplicity of childhood almost hurt.

After lunch, Daniel took Lily outside.

Not because he wanted to avoid Mara.

Because he needed air.

They walked slowly around the backyard.

Lily carried her rabbit.

Daniel pushed a small piece of wood back into place on the fence where it had loosened.

He did not need to fix the fence.

It was not dangerous.

It could have waited.

But his hands needed something to do.

“Daddy?”

“Yeah?”

“Are you and Mommy fighting?”

Daniel stopped.

He looked at the yard.

At the old tree near the corner.

At the swing set they bought when Lily was two.

“We’re having a hard conversation.”

“Because of me?”

The question hurt.

“No.”

He turned toward her.

“Never because of you.”

“But I touched the picture.”

Daniel knelt.

“Lily, listen to me.”

She looked at him.

“You finding something did not cause this.”

“Then what did?”

Daniel searched for an answer.

The honest one was too complicated.

Adults often wanted children to understand simple truths.

But sometimes the truth was not simple.

“Sometimes grown-ups keep things inside for too long,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because they think they are protecting people.”

“Does it work?”

Daniel looked toward the house.

He thought about Mara.

About himself.

About all the things he had ignored because he wanted peace more than honesty.

“Sometimes,” he said.

“And sometimes?”

He looked back at Lily.

“Sometimes it makes things harder.”

She nodded.

Then she reached up and touched his beard.

“You need to shave.”

Daniel blinked.

“What?”

“You look scratchy.”

For the first time all day, he laughed.

A real laugh.

Small.

Unexpected.

Lily smiled because she had caused it.

When they went back inside, Mara was sitting at the table with the letter in front of her.

Her phone rested beside it.

Daniel noticed she had not called anyone.

That mattered.

“I found something,” she said.

Daniel stopped.

“What?”

Mara looked at the paper.

“The handwriting.”

“What about it?”

“I know who wrote it.”

Daniel waited.

“Who?”

Mara lifted her eyes.

“Evan’s daughter’s mother.”

Daniel felt the weight return.

“Why would she write to me?”

Mara looked at the letter.

“Because she knew something about our family.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?”

Mara took a breath.

“Something I should have told you years ago.”

The room changed again.

Not because of a revelation.

Because Daniel realized the hardest part was not discovering the truth.

It was discovering how much truth had been waiting.

Mara looked at the letter again before speaking.

“She contacted me six months before Lily was born.”

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“Who contacted you?”

“Her name was Rachel.”

“The mother?”

Mara nodded.

“Why?”

Mara folded her hands on the table.

“She wanted to meet.”

Daniel waited.

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“No.”

The answer came quietly.

There was no defense behind it.

That almost made it worse.

“Why not?”

Mara looked toward the window.

“Because she told me something I wasn’t ready to hear.”

Daniel pulled out the chair and sat down.

“Tell me.”

Mara took a long breath.

“Rachel said Evan had another family.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

“He had another child.”

Daniel looked toward Lily.

The little girl was still coloring, unaware that every adult sentence in the room seemed to carry the power to change her life.

“But you said Lily was named after his daughter.”

“I thought she was.”

Mara’s voice became quieter.

“Rachel told me Evan had a daughter named Lily before he died.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Then why would there be another child?”

“I don’t know.”

The answer sounded painful because it was true.

Mara had spent years living with pieces of information that never connected.

“She said Evan had been trying to tell people,” Mara continued.

“He wanted to explain what happened.”

“What happened?”

Mara looked at the letter.

“She wouldn’t tell me over the phone.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“She said she wanted to see me in person.”

“And did you?”

Mara looked down.

“No.”

The silence that followed was heavier than anger.

Daniel leaned back.

“Why?”

“Because I was pregnant.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Mara closed her eyes.

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“Of losing everything.”

The honesty stopped him.

Mara continued.

“I had just found out I was going to have a baby.”

“I was building a life with you.”

“And then someone from Evan’s past called and told me there was another secret.”

Daniel looked away.

“So you ignored her.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Mara swallowed.

“Years.”

The word landed softly.

But it had weight.

Daniel looked at the photograph.

The old image.

The worn edges.

The name written on the back.

“How did she get this letter to me?”

“I don’t know.”

“You never met her?”

“No.”

“Then why would she trust you with this?”

Mara’s eyes moved to the letter.

“Maybe she didn’t.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“Maybe she trusted Evan.”

The thought unsettled him.

Because suddenly the letter was not only about secrets.

It was about someone trying to finish something before they ran out of time.

Daniel picked up his phone.

Mara watched him.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m looking for information.”

“About Rachel?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t even know her last name.”

Daniel looked at the letter.

The handwriting.

The date.

The details.

Then he noticed something he had missed before.

A faint mark in the corner.

A return address.

He leaned closer.

“Mara.”

She stood.

“What?”

“Did you see this?”

She moved beside him.

May you like

The two of them looked down.

The address was old.
