Chương 7

“You don’t understand what that contains.”
“I understand enough.”
“No.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You understand enough to get people hurt.”
The warning sounded genuine.
That made it worse.
Adrian had dealt with angry people.
He had dealt with liars.
The dangerous ones were often the people who believed they were protecting everyone.
Ethan moved between them.
“You don’t get to disappear for eight years and start giving orders.”
Daniel looked at his son.
“You think I wanted this?”
“I don’t know what you wanted.”
Ethan’s voice cracked.
“I don’t know anything about you anymore.”
For the first time, Daniel looked affected.
Only briefly.
But enough.
“I stayed away because people around me were safer without me.”
Ethan stared.
“That’s what you tell yourself?”
Daniel did not respond.
The corridor fell quiet again.
A distant alarm sounded somewhere above them.
Not a medical emergency.
A building notification.
Someone was changing something.
Megan looked at her phone.
“No signal.”
Adrian frowned.
“That’s impossible.”
“This basement has poor reception.”
“No.”
He looked toward the ceiling.
“Not like this.”
He remembered the lights.
The cameras.
The electronic records.
Someone was controlling access.
Someone was controlling movement.
Daniel noticed his reaction.
“They started earlier than I expected.”
Ethan turned.
“You knew this was happening?”
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation answered the question.
Ethan stepped toward him.
“You knew.”
“I knew there was a possibility.”
“You knew.”
Daniel looked at his son.
“I was trying to stop it.”
“By staying hidden?”
“I was trying to keep you out of it.”
Ethan’s face hardened.
“You don’t get to call abandoning me protection.”
The words landed harder than any accusation could have.
Daniel looked away.
Claire reached for the wall to steady herself.
Adrian noticed immediately.
“We need to get her somewhere safer.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“She can’t be moved far.”
Adrian studied him.
“How do you know?”
Daniel looked toward the file.
“Because I helped create the treatment protocol.”
The confession was quiet.
But nobody missed it.
Ethan turned slowly.
“What?”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“I was part of the original research team.”
Claire’s face changed.
“You said you weren’t.”
“I said I wasn’t responsible for what happened.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“No.”
Daniel accepted that.
“It isn’t.”
Adrian felt anger rise.
“You were involved in her care?”
“Before it became what it became.”
“That doesn’t answer the question.”
Daniel looked at him.
“No.”
His voice lowered.
“It doesn’t.”
Ethan looked between them.
“My father was involved in the program that destroyed your life.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“I don’t know if he destroyed it.”
The answer surprised everyone.
Even Claire.
She looked at Daniel.
“I know you knew something.”
Daniel nodded.
“I did.”
“But you tried to help.”
“I tried.”
“That’s not enough.”
Daniel looked down.
“No.”
It was the first time he admitted something without defending himself.
Adrian felt the difference.
Not forgiveness.
Not trust.
Just a crack in the wall.
A door opened at the far end of the corridor.
Everyone turned.
This time, the sound was not footsteps.
It was several people.
Megan looked frightened.
“We need to move.”
Daniel nodded.
“There’s an old imaging room nearby.”
Adrian hesitated.
“You expect us to follow you?”
Daniel looked at him.
“No.”
He glanced toward Ethan.
“I expect you to make the same mistake I made.”
Ethan frowned.
“What?”
“Thinking you have enough time to understand everything before you act.”
The words irritated Ethan because they sounded too much like advice.
But Adrian saw the truth beneath them.
Daniel was afraid.
Not of being caught.
Of being too late.
They moved quickly through the corridor.
Adrian stayed beside Claire.
Her steps became weaker with every few feet.
“You need to tell me what happened,” he whispered.
Claire looked at him.
“That’s not good enough.”
“I know.”
She stopped walking for a moment.
Her hand pressed against her side.
“I thought if I told people, they would believe I was unstable.”
Adrian remembered the file.
The fake diagnosis.
The manufactured history.
“Who made that fear real?”
Claire looked at Ethan.
Then at Daniel.
“Everyone.”
The answer hurt because it was not about one person.
It was about a system.
A group of choices.
A chain of people deciding silence was easier than truth.
They reached the old imaging room.
Daniel unlocked the door.
Inside was an outdated MRI machine covered with a protective sheet.
Dust covered the equipment.
A place forgotten by everyone except people who needed somewhere forgotten.
Daniel closed the door behind them.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Ethan looked at his father.
“Tell me why you let me bury you.”
Daniel sat down slowly.
The movement made him look older.
“I didn’t.”
Ethan stared.
“Then who did?”
Daniel looked at Claire.
And then at the file Adrian was holding.
“The same people who needed Claire Bennett to become a patient who nobody would believe.”
The room went silent.
Adrian opened the folder again.
A small document was tucked between the medical notes.
A handwritten page.
No hospital logo.
No signature.
Only one sentence.
If Claire remembers, Daniel’s identity cannot remain buried.
Adrian felt his stomach tighten.
Because suddenly the mystery was no longer about why Claire was targeted.
It was about what she remembered.
And what someone had done to make sure she forgot.
And what someone had done to make sure she forgot.
The sentence stayed with Adrian long after the room went quiet.
Not because it explained anything.
Because it suggested someone had known the danger before Claire ever became a patient.
Ethan took the paper from Adrian’s hand.
He read it once.
Then again.
The second time, his expression changed.
“What does this mean?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Daniel looked toward the covered MRI machine.
Claire looked at the floor.
Megan watched all of them like she was afraid the wrong person would speak first.
Adrian took the page back.
“It means someone believed Claire had information.”
“Information about what?”
Daniel answered quietly.
“Me.”
May you like
Ethan looked at him.
“Everything comes back to you.”
