Chương 3

Megan did not take it immediately.

She looked at Richard.

She needed to know if he would finally tell the truth.

Richard nodded slowly.

"You should read it."

Her hands trembled as she accepted the envelope.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The entire family watched as she opened something that had been waiting years to be discovered.

The paper inside was old, but the words remained clear.

Megan read the first line silently.

Then she stopped.

Her eyes filled with emotion.

Claire noticed immediately.

"What does it say?"

Megan could not answer.

She read another line.

Then another.

Her expression changed from confusion to pain.

Then from pain to disbelief.

Richard looked away.

He already knew what the letter contained.

The man who brought it here knew too.

But Megan was seeing it for the first time.

After several long seconds, she finally looked up.

"Why didn't you tell me he tried to come back?"

Richard's face fell.

The question revealed everything.

Claire looked between them.

"He tried to come back?"

Megan held the letter tightly.

"My father didn't leave because he didn't care."

Her voice became softer.

"He came back."

The truth hung in the air.

Richard swallowed hard.

"He wanted to explain."

Megan looked at him.

"And you stopped him."

Richard did not deny it.

The answer was written across his face.

The pain of that moment spread through everyone standing there.

The man who had fallen looked at Richard with sadness.

"You thought you were saving her from being hurt."

Richard whispered, "I thought I was."

"But you made the decision for her."

Richard lowered his head.

The afternoon light continued shining across the backyard, but the warmth of the gathering was gone.

The family that had stood together for years was now standing in front of the truth they had avoided.

Megan folded the letter carefully.

She was crying now, but she was not breaking.

She was finally understanding.

"I spent my whole life thinking he abandoned me."

Nobody interrupted.

"I thought he chose not to be there."

Her voice trembled.

"But he was trying to come back."

Richard nodded slowly.

"I was wrong."

Those words were difficult for him to say.

But they were the only honest words he had left.

Megan looked at him for a long moment.

She was hurt.

She was angry.

But beneath everything else was the pain of realizing how much time had been lost.

The man beside her looked toward the house.

"There is one more thing."

Everyone turned toward him.

Megan tightened her grip on the letter.

"What else?"

He looked at Richard.

Then back at Megan.

"Your father didn't just leave a letter."

The pause that followed made everyone uneasy.

"He left proof."

The backyard became silent again.

And this time, everyone understood that the secret they had uncovered was only the beginning.

Which direction should the next segment take: the hidden proof or Megan confronting Richard?

The backyard remained silent after the man's final words.

The proof he mentioned seemed to exist somewhere between the past and the present, waiting to change everything they believed.

Megan held the letter tightly against her chest.

Her fingers moved slowly across the old paper, as if touching the handwriting could somehow bring back the person who wrote it.

"My father left proof of what?" she asked.

The man looked at Richard before answering.

That brief exchange did not escape Megan's attention.

She had spent years being told that certain things were complicated, that certain memories were painful, and that some questions had no answers.

But now she realized there had always been answers.

People had simply chosen not to give them to her.

Richard took a slow breath.

"His journal."

Megan stared at him.

"A journal?"

Richard nodded.

"Your father kept notes about everything that happened during that time."

Claire looked confused.

"Then why would nobody know about it?"

Richard looked away.

"Because I never wanted anyone to find it."

The honesty of the confession shocked everyone.

Megan stepped back slightly.

She expected excuses.

She expected another explanation about protecting her or avoiding pain.

Instead, Richard finally admitted the truth.

He had hidden something.

Not because he had forgotten.

Not because he had lost it.

Because he made a choice.

"Where is it?" Megan asked.

Her voice was calm, but the emotion underneath it was impossible to ignore.

Richard looked toward the house.

"In a place where I thought nobody would ever search."

The man who had brought the letter forward spoke quietly.

"I found the location in the documents your father left behind."

Megan looked at him.

"How do you know about all of this?"

The man hesitated.

His eyes lowered.

"Because your father trusted me."

The answer created another wave of confusion.

Megan searched his face.

"Who are you?"

For the first time since the incident began, the man seemed uncomfortable.

He had been prepared to reveal the truth, but he had not been prepared to face the emotions attached to it.

"My name is Daniel."

Megan waited.

"I was your father's closest friend."

The words settled heavily.

She had never heard that name before.

Not once.

"My father never mentioned you."

Daniel looked sadly at the ground.

"He wanted to."

Richard closed his eyes.

Megan noticed.

Again, Richard knew more than he had admitted.

"Richard," she said quietly.

He looked at her.

"How many things did you keep from me?"

The question hurt him because there was no simple answer.

"I don't know how to make that right."

"You can't."

Megan's response came immediately.

The truth was painful, but she no longer wanted comfort built on lies.

She wanted honesty, even if it destroyed the image she had spent years believing.

Richard accepted her words.

He walked slowly toward the house.

Nobody spoke as he disappeared through the back door.

The others remained in the yard, surrounded by the same objects that had been there when the day started.

The cooler.

The plates.

May you like

The grill.

The chairs.
