Chương 4

Claire looked at him weakly.
“Mason…”
He immediately turned back to her.
“I’m here.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I tried to tell you.”
Mason closed his eyes.
The guilt hit him harder than the anger.
“I know.”
“No,” Claire whispered.
“You didn’t.”
The words hurt because they were true.
He had been so confident that he understood the people around him.
He had spent his life protecting his company from enemies.
But he had failed to protect his own family.
“I’m sorry,” Mason said quietly.
Claire looked at him.
“You believed everyone except me.”
Mason lowered his head.
The truth was painful.
But he accepted it.
“I should have listened.”
A tear moved down Claire’s cheek.
Not from weakness.
From disappointment.
Dr. Bennett checked her vital signs.
“She needs rest.”
But before he could step away, Claire held Mason’s hand tighter.
“There’s more.”
Mason looked at her.
“What?”
Claire’s breathing became slower.
“Vanessa didn’t do it alone.”
Everyone froze.
Ethan moved closer.
“What do you mean?”
Claire looked terrified.
“She said… someone else wanted the babies.”
Mason felt his blood turn cold.
“The babies?”
Claire nodded weakly.
“She said they would change everything.”
The three newborn babies slept peacefully in their bassinets.
Their tiny movements seemed impossible to connect with the darkness unfolding around them.
Ethan looked toward Mason.
“This just became bigger than one person.”
Mason stared at Vanessa.
She looked away.
That small movement confirmed his suspicion.
She knew more.
“Who was helping you?” Mason asked.
Vanessa remained silent.
The silence lasted too long.
Ethan stepped toward her.
“Vanessa, you need to understand something.”
His voice became firm.
“This room is now surrounded by cameras, security officers, and medical records.”
“You don’t have many places left to hide.”
Vanessa slowly looked up.
For the first time, her expression was not calm.
It was angry.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.”
Mason’s eyes hardened.
“Then tell me.”
Vanessa looked at Claire.
Then at the babies.
Then back at Mason.
A strange smile appeared on her face.
Not a happy smile.
A defeated one.
“You really think this is about Claire?”
Nobody answered.
Vanessa stepped closer to the door.
“This was never about hurting your wife.”
Mason felt a chill.
“Then what was it about?”
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“It was about taking back what should have been mine.”
Before anyone could stop her, the hospital hallway outside suddenly filled with the sound of running footsteps.
Security officers moved quickly toward the room.
And Mason realized the truth was about to become far more dangerous than he imagined.
And Mason realized the truth was about to become far more dangerous than he imagined.
The security officers entered the room quickly, their footsteps echoing against the polished hospital floor.
Two officers moved toward Vanessa while another spoke quietly into a radio.
Vanessa did not resist.
She simply stood there with an expression that was impossible to read.
Mason watched her carefully.
The woman who had spent years appearing graceful and composed now looked like someone whose final secret had been discovered too soon.
“What does she mean?” Mason asked.
Nobody answered immediately.
Vanessa looked at him with a strange mixture of anger and sadness.
“You really don’t remember, do you?”
Mason frowned.
“Remember what?”
She gave a small laugh.
A bitter, empty sound.
“Of course you don’t.”
Ethan stepped between them slightly.
“Vanessa, choose your next words carefully.”
But Vanessa ignored him.
Her eyes remained on Mason.
“You built your perfect life and never looked back.”
Mason felt confused.
“What are you talking about?”
Vanessa looked toward the newborn babies.
“Those children.”
Her voice lowered.
“They represent everything you took from me.”
The room became silent.
Claire looked terrified.
Mason stared at Vanessa.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“You do.”
“No.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“You just buried it.”
Ethan watched her closely.
“This sounds personal.”
“It is personal.”
Vanessa’s voice cracked for the first time.
“For fifteen years, I watched Mason Sloane become everything he wanted to be.”
She looked at Mason.
“I watched him build a family, a company, and a future.”
“And I watched him forget the people he destroyed along the way.”
Mason’s expression hardened.
“I never destroyed you.”
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“That’s because you don’t remember.”
Dr. Bennett looked between them.
“Mason, do you know this woman beyond what you told us?”
Mason hesitated.
He searched through years of memories.
Business meetings.
Charity events.
Family gatherings.
Nothing explained this.
“Vanessa was a family friend.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
Her voice became colder.
“I was never just a family friend.”
The words unsettled everyone.
Mason took a step forward.
“Then tell me the truth.”
Vanessa looked at Claire.
Then back at Mason.
“The truth is that Claire took the life that was supposed to be mine.”
Claire’s face changed.
Not because she understood.
Because she was afraid.
“Mine?” Mason repeated.
“Yes.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with emotion.
“You promised me a future.”
Mason froze.
“I never promised you anything.”
Vanessa looked away.
“That’s what you tell yourself.”
Ethan immediately noticed Mason’s reaction.
“Is there something from your past you haven’t told us?”
Mason looked frustrated.
“No.”
But his voice lacked certainty.
A memory appeared in his mind.
A younger version of himself.
Before the company.
Before the mansion.
Before Claire.
A difficult time when his life was completely different.
A time he rarely talked about.
“I knew Vanessa years ago,” Mason admitted.
Claire looked at him.
“You never told me.”
Mason turned toward her.
“Because it was nothing.”
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“Nothing.”
Her voice carried pain.
“That’s what I was to you.”
Mason looked away.
He hated that Claire had to hear this now.
Not while recovering.
Not while fighting to survive.
But Vanessa continued.
“We were together before Claire.”
Claire stared at Mason.
The pain in her eyes was not jealousy.
It was betrayal.
Mason immediately shook his head.
“It wasn’t like that.”
May you like
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You left me.”
