Chương 4
“Did you fall down?”
“No.”
“Did you black out?”
“No.”
“Do you know what day it is?”
Noah frowned.
“Wednesday.”
The paramedic glanced at his watch.
“Better than me.”
Noah’s mouth twitched.
The ordinary joke nearly undid Michael.
He turned toward the sink and gripped its edge.
A plate with dried spaghetti sauce sat beside the faucet.
He had told the children that morning he would wash it after work.
He had forgotten.
His entire life seemed suddenly composed of things he had meant to notice later.
Behind him, Vanessa said, “She’s obviously fine.”
Michael turned.
Jen’s face did not change.
“We haven’t finished evaluating her.”
“She’s talking.”
“That’s not how we determine whether a child needs medical care.”
Vanessa looked toward Michael for support out of habit.
He saw the exact moment she realized she would not get it.
Her face hardened again.
The front door opened before anyone reached it.
Claire came in without knocking.
She was still wearing navy scrub pants and a gray sweatshirt from the outpatient clinic where she worked.
Her hair was tied badly at the back of her head, and one shoelace was loose.
She saw Noah first.
Then Ella.
Then Vanessa.
“What did you do?”
Michael stepped toward her.
“Claire.”
She moved around him.
“What did you do to my daughter?”
Vanessa backed up.
“Don’t come at me like that.”
Claire kept moving.
Ramirez stepped between them.
“Ma’am, I need you to stop.”
“That woman put a chain on my child.”
“I understand.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Claire.”
Michael touched her arm.
She jerked away.
“Don’t.”
The word hit him harder than if she had shouted.
“Don’t touch me right now.”
Ella lifted her head.
“Mom.”
Claire’s whole body changed.
She crossed the kitchen, dropped to her knees, and wrapped both arms around Ella without asking what happened.
Ella began sobbing against her shoulder.
Claire closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she said nothing at all.
Then she looked at Noah.
“Come here.”
He hesitated.
That hesitation seemed to hurt her.
“Noah, honey.”
He stepped closer.
Claire pulled him in with her free arm.
Michael stood outside the circle.
He had no claim to the center of it.
Not tonight.
Maybe not for a long time.
Claire looked over Noah’s head at him.
“What happened?”
Michael opened his mouth.
No useful sentence came.
Vanessa answered instead.
“She stole from me.”
Claire turned her head slowly.
Ramirez moved again before she could stand.
“No.”
Claire stared at him.
“Sit with your kids.”
“I am sitting with my kids.”
“Then stay there.”
Michael almost admired the officer.
Claire did not.
“She accused a six-year-old of stealing, chained her up, poured water on her, and you want me to sit?”
“We are handling it.”
Claire laughed once.
There was nothing amused in it.
“You’d better.”
Ella’s breathing gradually slowed.
Jen checked her again.
“I’d like to take her in for evaluation.”
“I’m going with her,” Claire said.
Michael said the same thing at almost the same moment.
They looked at each other.
Claire’s jaw tightened.
“Of course you are.”
He deserved that.
“I’ll follow.”
“No.”
“I’m her father.”
“And where exactly were you while this was happening?”
The kitchen went silent.
Michael felt Noah look at him.
Claire’s anger had never been subtle, but it usually passed quickly.
This was different.
This had years underneath it.
“I was at work.”
“You left them with her.”
“Yes.”
“After Noah told you.”
Michael glanced at his son.
Claire saw the answer.
Her face lost color.
“He told you?”
Michael could not lie.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Months ago.”
Claire stared at him.
Noah began twisting the edge of his shirt.
“He didn’t know.”
Claire looked down.
“What do you mean?”
“I didn’t tell him everything.”
“Why not?”
Noah’s eyes filled.
“Because he always said we had to try harder.”
Michael closed his eyes.
Claire did not raise her voice.
That made it worse.
“You told them that?”
“I thought they were resisting the marriage.”
“You thought children were responsible for making your wife comfortable?”
“No.”
“That’s what he just said.”
“I know.”
“You don’t know.”
She stood carefully, keeping one hand on Ella’s shoulder.
“You don’t get to say that tonight.”
Michael nodded.
“I know.”
Claire’s mouth trembled with anger.
“Stop saying you know.”
The younger officer appeared beside Ramirez and murmured something.
Ramirez nodded.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Ms. Hale, I need you to come speak with me in the other room.”
“Am I under arrest?”
“Not at this moment.”
“Then I’m not going anywhere.”
“We can speak here if you prefer.”
Vanessa looked around at everyone.
The calculation was visible now.
Michael wondered how often he had mistaken calculation for composure.
Ramirez took out a small notebook.
“Did you place a chain around Ella’s wrist?”
Vanessa looked at Michael.
He did not rescue her from the question.
“I was trying to keep her from running away while we talked.”
Claire made a strangled sound.
Ramirez continued.
“Did you pour water on her?”
“She was hysterical.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To calm her down.”
Noah stared at Vanessa in disbelief.
“You said it was because she wouldn’t confess.”
Vanessa’s eyes flashed toward him.
“Noah, stay out of this.”
Claire stood.
Ramirez raised one hand without looking away from Vanessa.
“Do not address him.”
Vanessa’s face changed again.
For the first time that night, Michael saw something beneath the anger and control that looked like fear.
Not fear of what she had done.
Fear of losing command of the room.
Ramirez asked, “Did you strike Noah?”
“No.”
Noah froze.
Michael looked at his son’s cheek.
Ramirez asked again.
“Did you strike him?”
“I pushed him away.”
“With an open hand?”
“He got in my face.”
“He’s nine.”
“He was screaming.”
“I wasn’t,” Noah said.
Vanessa ignored him.
“He was out of control.”
Noah’s lips parted.
Michael stepped closer to him.
The boy whispered, “I wasn’t.”
“I believe you.”
May you like
Noah looked up sharply.
Michael wished those three words could travel backward in time.
