Chương 3

“I need you to tell me everything.”

Harper looked at Victoria.

“She will hear it.”

“I know.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

Julian followed her gaze.

For the first time, uncertainty crossed his face.

Not about Harper.

About the damage his family had done.

Victoria folded her arms.

“You are making a mistake by having this conversation here.”

Julian turned.

“Go inside.”

The command was not loud.

It did not need to be.

Two security officers moved closer.

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“You would remove your own mother from your property?”

Julian’s expression did not change.

“This is not my property.”

He looked at Harper.

“It is hers.”

Harper almost corrected him.

The farmhouse belonged to a bank.

The land had more problems than value.

But she understood what he meant.

For fifteen months, this had been the only place where she could raise Lily without pretending.

Victoria stepped back.

“You have no idea what is waiting for you in New York.”

Julian gave a tired smile.

“Actually, I do.”

He pulled out his phone.

The screen showed dozens of notifications.

Missed calls.

Messages.

Emergency meeting requests.

News alerts.

The world had continued turning while he landed in a field.

A man from his security detail approached carefully.

“Mr. Sterling.”

Julian looked over.

“Say it.”

“The board meeting has started.”

Victoria’s mouth curved slightly.

“There it is.”

Harper looked between them.

“What board meeting?”

Julian hesitated.

It lasted less than a second.

But Harper saw it.

The billionaire CEO who could negotiate billion-dollar deals was suddenly unsure how to explain something to her.

“That is why she came here today,” Julian said.

Victoria smiled.

“Tell her.”

Julian ignored her.

“My mother scheduled an emergency board meeting this morning.”

“For what?”

His silence answered before his words did.

“To remove me.”

Harper stared at him.

“What?”

Victoria walked closer.

“You see?”

Her voice regained its confidence.

“You think this little reunion changes reality.”

Julian looked at her.

“You planned the meeting before I knew about Lily.”

“Yes.”

“Because you thought I would leave.”

“Because I knew you would choose the company.”

The sentence hung there.

Harper looked at Julian.

Victoria looked at Julian.

Even the people watching from nearby seemed to wait.

Julian rubbed his forehead.

For the first time, Harper saw exhaustion instead of power.

Not the kind caused by missing sleep.

The kind caused by carrying something too heavy for too long.

“When my father died,” Julian said quietly, “everyone told me I had to save Sterling Enterprises.”

Victoria’s face softened slightly.

A memory passed between them.

Something old.

Something complicated.

“I was twenty-nine,” Julian continued.

“I had no idea what I was doing.”

Harper listened.

She had never heard this story.

“He left behind a company worth billions and a family that expected me to become someone I wasn’t.”

Victoria looked away.

“Do not rewrite history.”

Julian ignored her.

“I spent ten years proving I belonged there.”

He looked down at Lily.

“And somewhere along the way, I started believing that was all I was.”

The quiet confession surprised Harper.

The man everyone called untouchable had never seemed like someone who questioned himself.

But maybe the people who looked strongest were sometimes the ones most afraid of falling.

A gust of wind moved through the yard.

The old porch boards creaked beneath their feet.

Lily reached toward Julian’s collar and grabbed it.

He smiled despite himself.

A small, helpless smile.

Harper had seen that smile before.

Years ago.

At the diner.

Before either of them knew what they were walking into.

“I need to know why you never called me,” Julian said.

The question finally arrived.

Harper closed her eyes briefly.

There it was.

The question she had carried every day.

“I did.”

His face tightened.

“I know the letters.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I mean I called.”

Julian went still.

“Three times.”

Victoria’s expression changed.

Harper noticed.

“I called your office.”

She looked at Julian.

“I called your assistant.”

The memory came back with uncomfortable clarity.

A woman with a perfectly calm voice telling her that Julian was traveling.

A woman saying he received hundreds of messages every week.

A woman suggesting Harper stop contacting him.

“I thought you didn’t want to talk to me.”

Julian looked confused.

“My assistant never told me.”

Harper swallowed.

“She told me you were busy.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“Who?”

Harper looked toward Victoria.

The answer did not need to be spoken.

The silence was enough.

Julian stepped away from Harper slightly.

Not because he wanted distance.

Because he needed space to process the anger rising inside him.

“My executive assistant before Clara,” he said.

His voice lowered.

“Emily.”

Victoria said nothing.

That was the problem.

She always knew when silence was more dangerous than a lie.

Julian turned to his security officer.

“Find Emily Parker.”

The officer nodded.

“Immediately.”

Victoria finally lost control.

“This is ridiculous.”

Julian looked at her.

“You intercepted my mail.”

“I protected you.”

“You lied about my child.”

“I protected the company.”

“You destroyed my family.”

The last words were not shouted.

They were worse.

Victoria looked older suddenly.

For one second, she was not a powerful woman who controlled boardrooms.

She was a mother watching her son look at her like a stranger.

Then her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

Her confidence returned.

A small smile appeared.

“What?”

Julian watched her answer.

She listened for several seconds.

Then she looked directly at him.

“You should know something.”

Harper felt the air change.

“What happened?” Julian asked.

Victoria lowered the phone.

“The board has already voted on the first motion.”

Nobody moved.

“What motion?” Harper asked.

Victoria smiled.

“The one that removes you as CEO.”

Julian stared at her.

Victoria slipped the phone back into her purse.

“You came here chasing a woman and a child.”

She stepped toward the helicopter.

“Now you get to find out what it costs to leave your kingdom unattended.”

Julian looked at the farmhouse.

At Harper.

May you like

At Lily.

Then at the helicopter waiting in the field.
