Chương 4

A narrow line of mist dissolved above the far shore.

The mountain base appeared.

No revelation accompanied it. Stone had remained stone. Distance had remained distance. The lake had spent ages demanding confirmation from a world that continued whether confirmation arrived or not.

The bold message held steady.

“BREATHE, RELEASE, AND CHOOSE WHAT BRINGS YOU PEACE.”

The lake tried the first word.

Breathing did not belong to water, yet the landscape had its own exchange. Cool mist rose from the surface. Warm light entered. The curtain moved inward as air crossed the opening, then outward as the pressure changed. The room received brightness and gave back shadow. The mountains held heat on one side and darkness on the other.

Nothing breathed alone.

The lake allowed the mist above it to count as an exhale.

It did not push the mist away. It did not command vapor to rise. It merely stopped treating the drifting haze as something stolen from its surface. Moisture left the water and became air. It would return elsewhere or not. Its path did not need to be witnessed to remain real.

The pressure eased again.

The second word waited.

Release.

The lake searched for something safe to release, a minor question whose loss would not alter its identity. It chose the question of the curtain.

Why had the curtain moved before the wind arrived?

The lake examined the evidence out of habit. The fabric had shifted. The water had changed. The breeze had not yet become visible in mist or reflection. Possible causes presented themselves: a current of air moving through the dark room, a difference in temperature, the slow settling of cloth, a breeze too weak to mark the lake.

The lake could have continued.

It could have compared later movements, measured delays, studied folds. It could have carried the question through another thousand dawns.

Instead, the lake released it.

No answer replaced it.

The curtain remained on the right, charcoal and semi-transparent, its texture visible where light crossed the weave. It made one small movement in the soft breeze. The motion was enough.

The lake did not become emptier in a frightening way. It became available.

The difference surprised it.

There was more room for the amber reflection. More room for the dark mountains to appear without being compared to every previous mountain. More room for mist to be mist rather than evidence.

The lake turned toward the third word.

Choose.

This was the most difficult because the lake contained conflicting versions of peace.

One peace came from certainty. In that peace, every reflection matched its source, every mist revealed what it concealed, every dawn completed the questions left by night. Nothing unexpected disturbed the surface. The lake could rest because nothing remained unresolved.

That peace had never existed.

The other peace came without completion. It allowed the mountain to stand partly hidden. It allowed the curtain to move for reasons the lake did not fully know. It allowed the morning to brighten at its own pace. It asked the lake to remain open without demanding control.

That peace felt less secure.

It also felt possible.

The lake hesitated.

Mist crossed the reflection of the handwritten sentence. The white script dimmed where vapor thickened, though the actual words above remained readable. The lake noticed how easily it confused obscured with gone.

For a lighter heart, stop carrying every unanswered question.

The sentence did not insist that the lake release all questions. Some questions mattered. Some protected the lake from mistaking danger for beauty or repetition for truth. A lake that never questioned would accept every surface as complete.

The burden came from “every.”

The lake had given equal weight to all uncertainties. It carried the mystery of changing seasons beside the minor motion of cloth. It held the absence of a mountain reflection with the same seriousness as a vanished line of mist. It treated each unfinished perception as a debt owed by the world.

The world had never agreed to pay.

The nearest ridge grew clearer as the light rose behind it. Its outline was not smooth. Small rises and cuts interrupted the summit. From darkness, the ridge had looked simple. Dawn revealed irregularity.

The lake received the imperfect shape.

A faint distortion passed across the reflection.

This time the lake did not correct it.

The water moved because the air moved. The reflection bent because reflections bend. The mountain remained.

The lake chose the peace that allowed all three facts.

Nothing announced the choice. The golden logo did not brighten. The bold letters did not shift. The curtain did not open dramatically. The sunrise did not break over the ridge in a sudden blaze.

The morning continued at the same restrained pace.

That restraint made the choice real.

The lake had often imagined transformation as a visible event. It expected release to resemble overflow, lightness to resemble wind, peace to resemble perfect stillness. Instead, the change appeared as the absence of a familiar tightening.

The next question came, and the lake did not immediately seize it.

Why did the golden mark take the shape of speech when nothing spoke?

The question hovered.

The lake noticed it, then let it remain unanswered without pulling it downward.

The logo’s black outline kept the gold distinct from the warm sky. Its rounded body suggested a place where words might be held. Its small tail pointed toward nothing visible. It could have represented language. It could have represented listening. It could have been merely a design.

The lake did not decide.

This was new.

Unanswered did not have to mean carried.

The distinction moved through the landscape more softly than the breeze. The mist continued left. The pale-gold sky brightened behind the central ridge. The room’s deep shadows stayed dark, but the edge nearest the opening became less absolute. The curtain’s rightmost fold remained nearly black; its left edge glowed faintly where the sunrise passed through.

The lake considered the room.

All night, the room had faced the landscape without reflecting it. Its darkness received no image. The lake had thought this made the room empty.
