Chương 4
“I tied them.”
“Because it was offered.”
“I signed.”
“Both can be true.”
Iris had fallen asleep with one hand in the cocoa mug. Gabriel removed it carefully and wiped her fingers with a napkin.
Nia watched him.
“Do not confuse decent behavior in one room with innocence in another,” she said.
“I don’t.”
“You will.”
He looked at her, tired rather than offended. “Probably.”
The police agreed to postpone Iris’s interview until daylight. They photographed Daniela’s uniform and collected the cranberry-stained cuff. Desmond provided security logs. Celia left the estate through a service gate before officers formally asked her to remain.
At three seventeen, Sabine released a statement.
It described the incident as a regrettable misunderstanding involving a missing family heirloom. It said Mercer Hall was cooperating fully with law enforcement and that no conclusions should be drawn from edited recordings circulating online.
It did not say the accusation was withdrawn.
It did not say Iris was innocent.
It did not mention that Celia had taken the elephant.
At three forty, Daniela received a notice giving her seventy-two hours to vacate the south cottage.
Nia photographed the screen.
Gabriel read the notice twice.
“She cannot do this.”
“She just did,” Nia said.
“I will stop it.”
“Not tonight.”
He looked at Daniela. “You can stay here.”
“No.”
“I meant temporarily.”
“No.”
“Daniela, there are reporters outside the staff gate.”
“Then ask your sister to move.”
For the first time, something close to anger entered his face.
“This is not funny.”
“I am not laughing.”
“No. You are refusing help because you think accepting it excuses me.”
“You still have not asked what I photographed.”
“I am waiting until you have counsel.”
“That is almost admirable.”
Nia raised one hand.
“Both of you are tired, frightened, and becoming irritating. Gabriel, leave.”
He stared at her.
“Now.”
He took his coat from the chair.
Before leaving, he placed a business card on the dresser.
Daniela picked it up and handed it back.
“I know where you work.”
At dawn, Nia drove Daniela and Iris to a hotel under another name.
The hotel belonged to a Mercer competitor.
Nia found this pleasing.
Iris slept across the back seat with Bramble’s empty body beneath her cheek. Daniela watched rainwater stream across the windows and tried not to think about the cottage. Her clothes hung in its closet. Iris’s drawings covered the refrigerator. A pot of beans sat soaking in the kitchen. On the bathroom sink, Daniela had left one earring because she could never find both at the same time.
Their life had not ended dramatically.
It remained in place without them.
At the hotel, Iris slept until ten.
Daniela did not.
She sat on the bathroom floor with Bramble spread across her knees.
The police had returned the toy after documenting it. They had kept the cut threads and a sample of stuffing. The locket remained in evidence.
Daniela turned the elephant’s empty body inside out.
A narrow pocket had been sewn beneath the lining.
She had made it herself six weeks earlier.
Now it was empty.
Her stomach tightened.
The pocket had held a memory card containing photographs of foundation invoices, maintenance reports, and intercompany transfers. Daniela had copied them after finding that money marked for a transitional housing program had been used to renovate Mercer Hall’s west guest wing before the gala.
She had already sent most of the files anonymously to the foundation’s outside auditor. The card was a backup.
Hiding it inside Iris’s toy had seemed safer than keeping it in the cottage, where estate management entered for inspections.
Now the card was gone.
Daniela sat with the elephant in her lap until her legs went numb.
She had brought the danger to Iris.
Sabine had not chosen Bramble at random. Someone had known where the card was hidden.
When Nia returned with coffee and breakfast sandwiches, Daniela placed the elephant on the bed.
“There was something else inside.”
Nia closed the door.
“What?”
Daniela told her.
Nia did not interrupt. She did not soften her expression. She waited until Daniela finished, then set the coffee down untouched.
“You hid copied financial records in your daughter’s stuffed animal.”
“Yes.”
“Did Iris know?”
“No.”
“Did anyone see you do it?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Who knew you had the files?”
“No one.”
“That is not possible if someone targeted the pocket.”
Daniela rubbed both palms against her jeans.
“I took the card out once in the laundry room to add new photographs. Celia came in. I covered it.”
“Did she see the elephant?”
“Yes.”
“Did she see the card?”
“I don’t know.”
Nia paced to the window.
“This changes the case.”
“I know.”
“It gives them a motive to search the toy that has nothing to do with the locket.”
“I know.”
“It allows Sabine to claim you used Iris to conceal stolen documents.”
“I did conceal documents.”
“Copied documents.”
“That distinction will not matter online.”
“It will matter legally. Sometimes.”
Daniela looked toward the bed where Iris slept.
“I thought the elephant was safe.”
Nia’s face softened for the first time.
“You thought no adult would search a child’s toy.”
Daniela covered her eyes.
“I put it there.”
“You did.”
“She was standing in that ballroom because of me.”
“She was standing there because adults chose to frame her.”
“I made her available.”
Nia sat across from her.
“Guilt is going to offer you a simple story. You did one reckless thing, therefore everything that followed belongs to you. Do not accept simple stories from anyone, including yourself.”
Daniela lowered her hands.
“Will you still represent me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you told me before I discovered it.”
“That is a low standard.”
“You would be amazed.”
The first interview request offered Daniela $5,000.
The second offered twelve.
A streaming news program promised to pay for a week in a luxury hotel if Iris appeared on camera holding Bramble.

Nia rejected every offer.
Daniela’s phone filled with messages from strangers. Some called her brave. Some accused her of coaching Iris. One man claimed he had enhanced the ballroom audio and could prove the child confessed. Another offered to locate Iris’s father and “force him to take responsibility.”
