Chương 14

Lorenzo stood outside with Detective Pike.

The mansion rose beyond the trees, windows dark except for the third floor.

The nursery.

Carlo had chosen the room deliberately.

“He wants the beginning repeated,” Elena said.

Rachel checked the transmitter wire. “Then do not give him the same ending.”

Lorenzo entered the mansion alone.

Officers monitored his signal through headphones. For several minutes, only his footsteps and breathing came through.

Then Carlo’s voice.

“You took your time.”

“I had to decide whether you were worth it.”

“Still speaking like a child.”

“Still harming them?”

A chair moved.

Carlo said, “You brought police.”

“I brought consequences.”

“You always did enjoy words you didn’t earn.”

Pike listened, expression tight.

Lorenzo asked, “Where is Daria?”

“Safe.”

“Anton?”

“Less safe.”

“What did you do?”

“What was necessary.”

Elena looked at Pike.

He wrote a note to another officer.

Carlo continued, “You destroyed forty years of work because your wife died and left you frightened of your own name.”

“I did not destroy it.”

“You gave records to attorneys. You allowed police into our home. You lowered weapons at the gate.”

“My son needed an ambulance.”

“Your son needed a father who understood what protects him.”

“You starved him.”

“I made him ill.”

The distinction was monstrous in its calmness.

Inside the van, no one moved.

Lorenzo’s voice became quieter. “Why?”

“To stop you before every man connected to us decided whether you were a liability.”

“You could have spoken to me.”

“I did. You called me old.”

“You are old.”

Carlo laughed.

For a moment they sounded like family.

Then Carlo said, “The child was never in permanent danger until the maid interfered.”

Elena’s stomach turned.

Pike touched his headset. “We have enough for the attempt,” he whispered. “Not Daria’s location.”

Lorenzo asked, “Why select Elena?”

“Daria found her.”

“Through the agency you bought.”

“A useful investment.”

“You knew about her daughter.”

“She was psychologically ideal.”

Elena stared at the dark mansion.

Lorenzo’s breath came through the speaker.

Carlo said, “If Leo died, grief would explain her behavior. If he survived, she would remain an unreliable witness. Either result protected us.”

“You put her in that room knowing I might kill her.”

“I trusted your discipline.”

Silence followed.

Pike looked toward the tactical team near the wall.

Lorenzo said, “You trusted the wrong thing.”

A sound moved through the transmission.

Metal against wood.

A gun being drawn.

Rachel grabbed Elena’s wrist.

Inside the mansion, Carlo spoke gently. “There you are.”

Lorenzo did not answer.

“He wants you to shoot,” Elena said.

Pike held up a hand.

Carlo continued, “You cannot hand me to them. Not after everything I taught you.”

“You taught me to identify threats.”

“I am your blood.”

“So is Leo.”

“And when the government takes him? When your sister tires of raising him? When he grows old enough to learn his father betrayed every man who kept him alive?”

“You did not keep him alive.”

“I kept you alive.”

The transmission crackled.

Pike whispered, “Lorenzo, hold position.”

Carlo laughed again. “They are speaking in your ear, aren’t they?”

Lorenzo’s voice came low. “Daria’s phone.”

“On the table.”

“Unlock it.”

“No.”

A sharp movement followed.

Rachel said, “What happened?”

No one knew.

Then Carlo’s voice rose for the first time. “You think prison will make you clean? You think feeding bottles and supervised visits make you a father?”

Lorenzo said nothing.

“You were born into this. You have ordered men hurt. You have taken money from frightened people. You pointed a gun at that woman and now she looks at you as if you can be repaired.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Carlo’s voice softened. “You cannot become good, Lorenzo. You can only become weak.”

The silence lasted too long.

Pike reached for the order to enter.

Elena pulled off her headset.

“What are you doing?” Rachel asked.

“He thinks he has to answer alone.”

“Elena.”

She opened the van door.

Two officers blocked her.

“I am part of the conversation,” she said.

“You are not entering that house.”

“Then put me on the channel.”

Pike looked at her, then at the audio equipment.

Carlo had called her. He had already implicated her directly. Letting her speak was a risk. Letting Lorenzo remain inside the silence might be worse.

Pike handed her a microphone.

“Do not provoke him,” he said.

Elena pressed the switch.

“Lorenzo.”

Inside the nursery, something shifted.

Carlo said, “She came.”

Elena kept her eyes on the third-floor window.

“Put the gun down,” she said.

Carlo laughed. “You see? Even now, she gives you orders.”

Elena continued, “Not for him. For Leo.”

Lorenzo’s breathing changed.

“He needs a father who comes back,” she said. “Not one who wins this room.”

Carlo’s voice sharpened. “You believe he will forgive you for making him kneel to police?”

“I don’t need him to forgive me.”

“You need his money.”

“No.”

“His protection.”

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

Elena looked at Rachel, at Pike, at the dark trees surrounding the mansion.

“Because you chose me for my grief,” she said. “You thought losing June made me weak enough to use. You were wrong.”

Carlo did not answer.

“You thought Lorenzo’s grief made him predictable,” she continued. “You were wrong about that too.”

A soft thud came through the speakers.

The gun placed on the floor.

Pike gave the entry signal.

Officers moved across the lawn and through the mansion doors.

Carlo’s voice exploded. “What have you done?”

Lorenzo answered, “Chosen my son.”

The transmission filled with commands, footsteps, furniture scraping.

A gunshot cracked.

Elena stopped breathing.

Then Pike’s radio came alive with overlapping voices.

Suspect down.

Not fatal.

Weapon secured.

One in custody.

Lorenzo secure.

The nursery window remained lit.

Five minutes later, officers led Carlo from the mansion. Blood stained one sleeve where a tactical round had struck his upper arm after he reached for a second pistol hidden beneath the table. He walked without assistance, his face pale with fury.

He saw Elena beside the van.
