Chương 9

Bell & Marín received four hundred inquiries and two cancellations.

One cancellation came from Sasha.

Her mother wrote that the family preferred not to associate the wedding with controversy.

Tessa read the email aloud, then said, “Sasha has changed her sleeve design six times. Controversy is the only stable relationship in that household.”

Elena refunded the deposit portion required by contract and kept the nonrefundable design fee.

The other cancellation hurt more. A longtime client said she feared photographers would connect her gown to Elena’s story.

“I understand,” Elena told her on the phone.

She did not understand. She wanted to tell the woman that humiliation was not contagious through silk.

Instead, she made notes about transferring the project.

On Thursday afternoon, Rachel received a response from Moretti House counsel.

The letter denied unauthorized commercial use, described the presentation as “an internal exploratory document,” and claimed the bank transfer was a legitimate investment made by Adrian from funds he had contributed.

“They are separating him from you financially after the fact,” Rachel said.

“Luciana’s idea?”

“Her lawyer’s. Lawyers are blamed for many things we are asked to do.”

The letter offered to return twenty-two thousand dollars within ninety days if Elena signed a mutual confidentiality agreement and released all claims.

“Half,” Elena said.

“They are treating the account as half Adrian’s.”

“He transferred the full amount.”

“Yes.”

“And they want me silent.”

“They want everyone silent.”

“What happens if I refuse?”

“We demand accounting, pursue recovery, and consider claims related to the materials. It will cost money. It will take time. Results are not guaranteed.”

Elena looked at the draft confidentiality clause.

It prohibited her from discussing the wedding, the business proposal, the dress, the bank transfer, and “private family communications.” Luciana could continue describing the event as a misunderstanding, while Elena would be contractually unable to correct her.

“No,” Elena said.

Rachel studied her. “You do not have to decide this minute.”

“I have decided.”

“Then I’ll reject it.”

Adrian called that night.

Elena let it ring twice before answering.

“I heard you rejected the offer,” he said.

“Your lawyer works quickly.”

“My mother’s lawyer.”

“Is there a difference?”

“Yes.”

“Show me.”

He exhaled. “I told her the full money has to come back.”

“When?”

“When the villa refinances.”

“That could take months.”

“I know.”

“She has assets.”

“The property is the asset.”

“She has jewelry, a car, art.”

“She is not selling her life because we had a fight.”

Elena stood at the apartment window. Below, a delivery driver carried three grocery bags toward the wrong building.

“We did not have a fight,” she said.

“I know that.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

He took a long time.

“I betrayed you.”

The sentence was plain. No qualification followed.

Elena sat down.

Adrian continued. “I gave her the photographs. I let Pietro use your name. I moved the money. I lied about the meeting. I knew you would say no, so I arranged things until saying no would cost everyone more.”

The precision of it made her angry in a new way.

“How long have you been able to say that?”

“Since the wedding.”

“No. Since before.”

He did not defend himself.

“Why?” she asked.

“The villa was failing.”

“That explains the money.”

“She was failing with it.”

“That explains why she asked.”

“I thought if the business worked, she would stop needing me for every crisis.”

Elena looked at the dark window and saw her own reflection.

“You built a business with her so she would stop needing you.”

“I know how it sounds.”

“It sounds like you tried to cure dependency by becoming business partners.”

A bitter laugh escaped him. “Rachel said something similar.”

“You spoke to Rachel?”

“My therapist. Rachel Moreno.”

Elena had not known he had a therapist.

“When did that start?”

“Monday.”

Four days. Too little to mean transformation. Enough to mean he had finally done one thing without being told by Elena.

“I am not asking you to forgive me,” he said.

“Good.”

“I need you to know my mother did not tell me to take the money. She asked for help. The transfer was my decision.”

“Why are you protecting her?”

“I’m not. I’m telling the truth.”

“She knew the money was ours.”

“Yes.”

“She accepted it.”

“Yes.”

“And she planned to use my name.”

“Yes.”

Each answer arrived faster now.

Elena pressed her fingers against her temple.

“What do you want from me?”

“Nothing tonight.”

“Then why call?”

“Because every time you asked me a question, I looked toward her before I answered. I wanted to answer one without checking.”

Elena closed her eyes.

The old part of her, the one trained by years of loving him, recognized the cost of that sentence. She felt tenderness rise and hated it. Tenderness was not forgiveness. It was only evidence that love did not leave when instructed.

“The full amount must be returned,” she said.

“I agree.”

“My name and work cannot be used.”

“I agree.”

“You will provide a written statement to every investor and partner who received the deck, saying I did not approve it.”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Your mother will hate you.”

“I know.”

“Will you still do it?”

“Yes.”

She waited for the glance she could not see.

He added, “Even if she loses the villa.”

Elena’s throat tightened.

“That does not bring us back,” she said.

“I know.”

After the call, she sat in the dark until the grocery delivery driver returned to the street and found the correct building.

The following morning, Adrian sent a signed statement through his attorney.

It confirmed that Elena had never authorized the Moretti House Bridal concept, that the design materials had been shared without her consent, and that he had represented her likely participation without a reasonable basis.

Rachel read it twice.

“This is unusually direct,” she said.

“Is that good?”

“It is useful.”

“For him?”

May you like

“Not especially.”

Adrian also agreed to transfer the remaining joint savings into a trust account while ownership was resolved. He surrendered his access to the funds and offered to assign Elena his share of an upcoming work bonus toward repayment.
