Chương 14

Elena wrote: You fired Celia for less than this.

No reply followed.

Ortiz asked Daniel who Celia was.

He told her.

The investigation found Celia Ramos in Maryland. She had spent twelve years working in hotel laundry after Margaret accused her of stealing from the Vale family. She agreed to speak but did not remember Elena fondly.

“She signed the paper,” Celia told investigators. “The little girl with the pretty hair. Everyone says children are forced. Maybe. I was still fired.”

When Daniel heard, he felt an irrational urge to defend Elena.

He did not.

Celia’s statement established a pattern of Margaret protecting Ethan by manufacturing a more convenient culprit. It did not prove murder. It did, however, explain the history Elena had tried to escape.

Ethan’s formal account came two days later.

Ortiz summarized it for Daniel in her office.

According to Ethan, Margaret asked Elena to Vale House by claiming the missing clinic money had been restored. Ethan was already there despite Margaret’s promise. When Elena tried to leave, Margaret blocked the door and demanded the blue folder.

Elena refused.

Margaret produced printed copies of Elena’s messages with Daniel and threatened to release them along with selected medical records. Ethan claimed Margaret intended only to frighten Elena into delaying disclosure.

“Do you believe that?” Daniel asked.

“I believe Ethan wants us to believe it.”

Ortiz continued.

Margaret offered Elena a drink. Elena declined. An argument lasted nearly an hour. At some point, Margaret told Ethan to bring a small medical case from the upstairs bathroom.

Ethan admitted the case contained a syringe.

He claimed Margaret said the injection was a prescribed calming medication Elena had taken before. Elena resisted. Ethan held her wrists while Margaret injected her upper arm.

Daniel’s vision narrowed.

Ortiz stopped. “Do you need a minute?”

“No.”

“Captain—”

“Continue.”

Within several minutes, Elena became weak and confused. She tried to reach the front door. Margaret demanded the location of the files. Ethan searched Elena’s purse and took her phone.

Elena moved toward the staircase, possibly intending to reach Margaret’s office or another exit through the upper hall. Ethan followed. He said Elena turned at the top step and struck him with a framed photograph.

He grabbed her arm.

Margaret reached for the folder Elena had tucked inside her coat.

Elena pulled away.

She fell sideways.

Ethan insisted neither of them pushed her deliberately.

After the fall, Elena remained conscious. She was bleeding and unable to stand. Ethan wanted to call emergency services. Margaret refused until they found the folder and determined what Elena had already sent.

They moved Elena from the hall to the sitting room because, according to Ethan, Margaret said the blood on the marble would be “impossible to explain.”

Margaret used Elena’s face to unlock her phone.

She found messages to Naomi and evidence of the cloud archive but no password. She called Graham Pike for advice, describing the financial disclosure but not Elena’s condition.

Ethan left with the phone to dispose of it. When he returned, Elena was unresponsive. Margaret called emergency services.

Daniel sat rigidly through the account.

“Did she speak after the fall?” he asked.

“Ethan says she did.”

“What did she say?”

“He claims she repeatedly asked for you.”

Daniel looked at Ortiz’s desk.

There was a coffee stain near the edge shaped like a thumbprint.

“He could be saying that for effect.”

“Yes.”

“Do you believe him?”

“I believe Elena was conscious long enough to leave blood in two locations. The medical evidence supports that.”

“Did Margaret respond?”

“Through counsel. She denies injecting Elena, restraining her, or delaying care. She says Ethan administered the injection after Elena became violent. She claims she was afraid of both of them.”

“They’re blaming each other.”

“Yes.”

“Which one killed her?”

Ortiz leaned back.

“That question may not have a clean answer. The evidence suggests both participated in restraining and drugging her. The fatal fall occurred during the struggle. Both delayed medical care and concealed evidence.”

“That sounds clean enough.”

“For you. A jury will be asked to separate acts, intentions, and legal responsibility.”

Daniel stood and walked to the office window.

Below, traffic moved through an intersection. A delivery cyclist waited at the light, balancing one foot on the curb.

“What happens now?”

“Prosecutors are reviewing charges. Ethan’s cooperation does not guarantee an agreement. Margaret may be arrested soon.”

“May.”

“Yes.”

Daniel turned. “Did you find the blue folder?”

“No.”

“Ethan says Margaret took it.”

“He says she burned part of it and hid the rest.”

“Where?”

“He doesn’t know.”

“He lived in that house.”

“Large houses contain many places people don’t know.”

Daniel thought of Margaret’s careful rooms, each designed to reveal taste and conceal use.

“Elena mentioned the sitting room in an audio note,” he said. “She said Margaret kept old tax records behind something.”

Ortiz opened her notebook. “Behind what?”

“I don’t remember. A painting or cabinet.”

“Think.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

He had heard the note while scrolling through the archive. Elena’s voice, impatient: Mother claims she destroyed the original statements, but she keeps every document that might someday become leverage. Check the green room cabinet if we get authority. The back panel sticks because Ethan broke it hiding cigarettes when he was fourteen.

“The green room,” Daniel said. “A cabinet with a false or damaged back.”

Ortiz was already standing.

The search team returned to Vale House that afternoon.

Behind the rear panel of a lacquered cabinet in the green sitting room, they found part of the blue folder. It contained original bank records, handwritten notes, and a small digital camera.

The camera’s memory held a video Elena had made while photographing documents at Vale House two weeks before her death. Near the end, voices approached outside the room.

Elena lowered the camera but did not stop recording.

Margaret entered with Ethan.

Their conversation was muffled but intelligible.

Ethan asked whether Elena had “found the casino statements.”

Margaret replied, “She found enough.”

Ethan said, “Then we tell her Daniel has been talking to doctors.”
