Chương 8

“It means homicide cases don’t get easier because everyone is hurting.”

Nathan stood.

Vasquez did not stop him.

At the door he turned.

“Was Claire on the recording?”

“Yes.”

“She told him to stop.”

“Yes.”

Nathan nodded once.

He hated the relief that gave him.

The following Monday Ryan requested a meeting through lawyers.

Marlene advised Nathan not to attend.

Nathan attended.

The meeting took place in a neutral conference room at a downtown law office. Ryan sat beside his attorney, a silver-haired man named Daniel Kessler who spoke softly and wrote with a fountain pen.

Nathan sat beside Marlene.

There was no coffee on the table.

Nathan noticed because law offices always had coffee.

Kessler began.

“My client is prepared to clarify several facts voluntarily.”

Marlene said, “Then he can clarify them to law enforcement.”

“He has.”

“Not accurately.”

Ryan looked at Nathan.

Nathan looked back.

Kessler continued.

“Ryan acknowledges he was present at the Cole residence. He acknowledges an inappropriate relationship with Mrs. Cole. He acknowledges a verbal argument occurred.”

Nathan’s fingers tightened under the table.

Marlene touched his wrist once.

Kessler went on.

“He denies intentionally or recklessly causing Sophie’s death.”

Nathan leaned forward.

“Did you touch her?”

Ryan’s attorney looked at him.

Ryan answered anyway.

“Yes.”

The room changed.

Nathan felt Marlene become still beside him.

“How?”

Ryan’s voice was quieter than usual.

“She was holding Bruno’s collar with one hand and the tablet with the other. I tried to take the tablet.”

“Why?”

“Because she was going to call you.”

“Why was that a problem?”

Ryan stared at the table.

Nathan waited.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“Yes.”

Nathan sat back.

There was something almost insulting about the simplicity.

Ryan looked at him.

“I grabbed the tablet. Bruno came between us. He growled. I pushed him away.”

“The dog?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to Sophie?”

“She pulled back.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“I reached across Bruno.”

“And?”

“She lost her balance.”

Nathan leaned forward.

“Did your hand touch her?”

Ryan hesitated.

Kessler said, “Ryan.”

Ryan ignored him.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Her shoulder.”

Nathan’s mouth went dry.

“Did you push?”

“No.”

“Did you shove?”

“No.”

“Then what did you do?”

“I reached.”

Nathan stared.

Ryan stared back.

“I reached too hard,” Ryan said.

Marlene inhaled slowly.

Nathan heard Sophie’s seventeen seconds in his head.

Dad should know.

“What did you do after she fell?”

Ryan’s eyes dropped.

“I went down the stairs.”

“Did you touch her?”

“I checked her pulse.”

“Did you see the bracelet?”

“I don’t remember.”

“Did Bruno bite you?”

Ryan looked up.

The silence lasted too long.

Nathan felt something settle inside him.

Not certainty.

Shape.

“He caught my hand.”

Nathan’s voice became almost gentle.

“So that’s why you asked Pete.”

Ryan said nothing.

Nathan looked at Kessler.

“Why are we here?”

The lawyer closed his pen.

“My client wants to prevent additional harm.”

Nathan laughed.

Kessler continued without reacting.

“The company is under pressure. Your family is under extraordinary public scrutiny. Mrs. Cole may face legal consequences for her initial statement.”

Nathan looked at Ryan.

“There it is.”

Ryan’s face tightened.

Kessler said, “There is also no evidence of intentional homicide.”

Marlene responded.

“That determination belongs to prosecutors.”

“Of course.”

“What do you want?” Nathan asked.

Kessler folded his hands.

“Ryan will resign from Cole Meridian. He will surrender any disputed compensation claims. He will provide a complete statement regarding the affair and the events at the house.”

“In exchange for?”

“He asks that you stop making public allegations and instruct the company not to characterize his departure as misconduct.”

Nathan stared at him.

“That’s it?”

Kessler paused.

“And that you not pursue civil claims against him before the criminal investigation concludes.”

Nathan looked at Ryan.

“You’re negotiating.”

Ryan met his eyes.

“I’m trying to keep one bad night from destroying every person in the room.”

Nathan stood.

Marlene touched his sleeve.

He did not sit.

“One bad night.”

Ryan’s face changed.

“Nathan.”

“My daughter is dead.”

“I know.”

“No. You know a sentence.”

Ryan stood too.

Kessler said his name.

Ryan kept looking at Nathan.

“I think about her every day.”

Nathan felt his hand close.

Marlene rose beside him.

Ryan’s voice broke slightly.

“I hear her hit the door.”

Nathan moved.

Marlene stepped directly in front of him.

Not because she was strong enough to stop him.

Because she knew he would stop for her.

He did.

Ryan’s face had gone pale.

Nathan looked at him across Marlene’s shoulder.

“You left.”

Ryan swallowed.

“Yes.”

“You left her on the floor.”

“Yes.”

Nathan nodded.

“That’s the part you don’t get to negotiate.”

He walked out.

Three days later, Claire was charged with making a false statement to investigators.

Not homicide.

Not obstruction at the level Nathan had feared.

The prosecutor’s office released a brief statement confirming that the death investigation remained open.

News vans appeared at the edge of the property again.

Nathan stood behind the living-room curtains and watched a reporter speak into a microphone while a cameraman framed the house behind her.

Sophie’s bedroom window was visible over the reporter’s shoulder.

Nathan walked outside.

The reporter approached immediately.

“Mr. Cole, can you comment on your wife’s charge?”

Nathan kept walking.

“Do you believe Ryan Mercer killed your daughter?”

He stopped.

Marlene had told him not to answer.

Vasquez had told him not to answer.

Every reasonable person had told him not to answer.

He turned.

The camera pointed at him.

Bruno stood on the porch behind him.

Nathan looked into the lens.

“I believe my daughter deserved adults who told the truth the first time.”

Then he went back inside.

Marlene called thirty seconds later.

“What did I say?”

Nathan sat on the stairs.

“Something about not talking.”

“I used shorter words.”

“Probably.”

“You done?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

She hung up.

Nathan smiled despite himself.

The next morning the quote was everywhere.

Some people praised him.

Some accused him of abandoning Claire.

Some said grief had made him cold.
