Chương 7

He looked at Mia.

Then back at Elena.

“She is Lena Russo’s daughter.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Anthony’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But Elena saw the guilt.

“She is my half sister.”

The words sat between them.

Mia stared at him.

Not with shock.

With confusion.

A child could understand a stranger being dangerous.

A child could understand someone being cruel.

Family was harder.

Family was supposed to mean something.

“Is my mom okay?” Mia asked.

Anthony looked at her.

And for a moment, Elena saw something genuine.

Pain.

“I don’t know.”

Mia’s face fell.

She turned away.

Elena felt anger rise.

Not because Anthony did not know.

Because everyone in this world seemed comfortable letting a child live inside uncertainty.

“Why are you here?” Elena asked.

Anthony looked toward the office.

“Because someone is coming.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the only one that matters right now.”

“No.”

Her voice hardened.

“You do not get to appear in my house after midnight, admit you lied to me, and decide what information I receive.”

Anthony looked tired.

“I never lied.”

Elena laughed once.

“You let everyone believe something false.”

“I did not know what to tell you.”

“That is still a choice.”

He accepted that.

Unlike his father, Anthony did not fight every accusation.

That made him harder to understand.

“My father told me to stay away from Lena,” he said.

Mia looked up.

Anthony continued.

“She was investigating money transfers between companies connected to our family.”

“The records,” Elena said.

Anthony nodded.

“She found something.”

“What?”

“I do not know.”

Elena stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to believe I was not important enough to be told.”

The honesty caught her off guard.

Anthony leaned against the wall.

“My father trusted me with appearances.”

He looked toward the dining room.

“The speeches.”

“The meetings.”

“The family image.”

His mouth tightened.

“But not the things that mattered.”

Elena understood that kind of pain.

Not the same pain.

But the shape of it.

Living beside powerful people often meant discovering you were valued for what you represented, not who you were.

“What happened to Lena?” she asked.

Anthony looked at Mia.

“I was trying to find out.”

“Trying?”

“She contacted me three weeks ago.”

Elena’s attention sharpened.

“What did she say?”

Anthony hesitated.

“She said if anything happened, I had to get Mia to someone outside the family.”

“Why didn’t you?”

His silence answered first.

Then he spoke.

“Because I was afraid.”

The admission surprised everyone.

Even him.

“I thought I could handle it quietly.”

Tomas shook his head.

“That is how people get hurt.”

Anthony looked at him.

“I know.”

The basement door behind them creaked.

Everyone turned.

No one moved.

The sound had come from downstairs.

A slow movement.

A person trying not to be heard.

Elena felt the room change.

Anthony’s face lost what little color it had.

“That’s not my father.”

The words were almost a whisper.

“Who is it?” Elena asked.

Anthony did not answer.

He reached into his jacket.

Tomas immediately moved forward.

Anthony stopped.

“Relax.”

“You just reached for something.”

“I’m not here to hurt you.”

“Everyone says that right before they do something stupid.”

For the first time that night, Anthony almost smiled.

A small, exhausted reaction.

“That sounds like something Marco would say.”

Elena went still.

Nobody spoke his name casually.

Not anymore.

“How do you know Marco?”

Anthony looked at her.

The question had been waiting.

“I knew him.”

“That is impossible.”

“No.”

Anthony shook his head.

“What is impossible is believing everything you were told.”

The footsteps below stopped.

Then a voice came from the basement.

“Elena.”

Her blood ran cold.

Because it was not Anthony’s voice.

It was Carlo’s.

Anthony closed his eyes.

“He followed me.”

Elena looked at him.

“You brought him here.”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

Then Anthony corrected himself.

“I brought trouble here.”

The basement door moved.

Slowly.

Carlo appeared at the top of the stairs.

He looked different than he had at the feast.

Older.

More tired.

Less like the man who controlled the room.

“Elena,” he said.

His eyes moved to Mia.

Then to Anthony.

The disappointment on his face was almost worse than anger.

“I was hoping I was wrong.”

Anthony stepped forward.

“Dad.”

Carlo looked at him.

“You have no idea what you have done.”

Elena moved slightly, placing herself between Carlo and Mia.

“What did you do, Carlo?”

He looked at her.

Not offended.

Not surprised.

Just sad.

And that frightened her more.

“You think this is about money.”

Nobody answered.

Carlo continued.

“You think it is about records and secrets and who betrayed who.”

His gaze returned to Mia.

“It is bigger than that.”

Elena watched his face carefully.

For the first time, Carlo Bellavita looked like a man carrying something too heavy to hide.

“What happened to Lena?” she asked.

Carlo looked away.

A mistake.

A tiny one.

But enough.

Elena saw it.

“You know.”

Carlo did not answer.

“You know where she is.”

Still nothing.

Mia stepped forward.

“My mom said you were scared of the truth.”

Carlo looked at the child.

Something changed.

Not guilt.

Not exactly.

Something closer to recognition.

Then the lights flickered back on.

And everyone in the room saw the same thing at once.

Carlo was holding a photograph.

An old photograph.

One Elena had never seen before.

A photograph of Marco.

Lena.

And a young Anthony standing beside them.

Elena stared at the photograph in Carlo’s hand.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The image was old enough that the edges had softened, but not old enough to erase the truth inside it.

Marco stood in the center.

Younger.

Alive.

His arm rested around Lena Russo’s shoulder.

Anthony stood beside them, maybe twelve years old, with the same serious expression he carried now.

A family picture.

May you like

Except it was a family that was never supposed to exist.

Elena felt something inside her collapse and rebuild itself at the same time.
