Chương 5

Thomas closed the door but did not sit.

“I heard you found the photo.”

Daniel stared.

“How?”

Thomas rubbed his hands together.

“Because everyone who knew about Thomas Ellison has been waiting for that moment.”

The sentence made Daniel’s anger sharpen.

“Everyone?”

Thomas looked away.

“I should have told you earlier.”

“Yes.”

“I know.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Thomas sat down slowly.

“Because three years ago, I found a financial transfer connected to the project. I tried asking questions.”

“And?”

“I was told to stop.”

“By who?”

Thomas looked at the table.

“The board.”

Daniel waited.

Thomas swallowed.

“And someone reminded me that my daughter’s scholarship was funded through one of the foundation’s partner programs.”

The room went quiet.

It was not a dramatic threat.

That was what made it worse.

A normal person with a normal life had been placed in a position where doing the right thing could hurt someone he loved.

“I thought I could fix it quietly,” Thomas said. “I was wrong.”

Daniel sat across from him.

“What did you find?”

Thomas opened a folder.

Inside were copies of old financial documents.

Not the originals.

Copies.

“The money used to save the housing project came from several sources.”

Daniel looked at the pages.

“There’s Mercer Holdings.”

Thomas nodded.

“My father’s company.”

“Yes.”

“He was dead.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked up.

“And Thomas Ellison?”

Thomas hesitated.

“He was connected to the company.”

“How?”

“That’s what I never found.”

Daniel turned the page.

A signature appeared near the bottom.

Not his father’s.

Not Mara’s.

Someone else’s.

But beneath the signature was a date.

A date Daniel recognized.

The week Emily died.

His fingers stopped moving.

Thomas noticed.

“What is it?”

Daniel could not answer immediately.

A memory had surfaced.

Not a complete one.

Just a fragment.

Emily sitting at a kitchen table.

A man’s voice behind him.

A sentence he could not fully hear.

Something about keeping Daniel away from the records.

Then nothing.

Gone.

“Daniel?”

He looked up.

“There was something else.”

Thomas waited.

“Someone knew I would find this.”

Before Thomas could respond, Daniel’s phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

One photograph.

This time, it was not from outside the foundation.

It was from inside.

The image showed Daniel standing in the archive room three years earlier.

His hand rested on a locked cabinet.

The timestamp was clear.

He had been there.

But he had no memory of the night.

Under the picture was a message.

You were looking for the truth before you forgot it.

Daniel stared at the screen.

And for the first time, he wondered if forgetting had been something that happened to him.

Or something someone made happen.

The Hidden Signature That Pulled An Entire Family Back Into An Unfinished Truth

Mara Ellison knew something was wrong before she opened the file.

The restricted archive system had never sent her a notification before. Not for a routine access request. Not for a forgotten document. Not for anything that belonged to the daily work of keeping the community housing fund alive.

The alert appeared at the top of her screen while she was still standing in the hallway outside her office.

ACCESS CONFIRMED: EVELYN ELLISON FAMILY RECORDS REVIEW.

Mara stared at the words until the hallway noise faded into the background.

A printer somewhere down the corridor started running. Someone laughed near the reception desk. A delivery driver argued politely with a receptionist about a missing signature.

Normal things.

That was the part she hated most.

The world continued behaving normally while her life kept developing impossible problems.

She opened the file history.

Her credentials were listed.

Her authorization level was listed.

Her name was attached to an action she had never taken.

But this time, there was something different.

The access did not look like the forged transfer request from earlier.

It looked older.

Careful.

Someone had not just broken into the system.

Someone had been searching.

Mara sat down slowly.

Lena appeared at the doorway holding a folder against her chest.

“You look like you’re about to either throw up or fire someone,” she said.

Mara looked up.

“That’s a very specific range.”

“It’s been a strange week.”

Lena stepped inside but did not move closer immediately. Since the document appeared that morning, both of them had been measuring every word.

Not because they stopped trusting each other.

Because trust felt expensive now.

Mara turned the monitor toward her.

Lena read the screen.

Her expression changed.

“That’s not the same access.”

“No.”

“The transfer document was created using your account.”

“This wasn’t.”

Lena pulled a chair closer.

“Then why is your name attached?”

“I don’t know.”

The answer bothered Mara because she was usually the person who had answers. Not perfect ones. Not easy ones. But answers.

She had spent fifteen years running the housing organization by knowing which problems required patience and which ones required immediate action.

This belonged to neither category.

It was personal.

And personal problems were always harder because people lied better when their own history was involved.

Lena tapped the folder in her hands.

“I found something.”

Mara looked at her.

“You already had something?”

“I found something that I wasn’t sure mattered.”

“That is usually when things matter.”

Lena opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails and handwritten notes.

Mara recognized the handwriting immediately.

Daniel’s.

“He gave these to me two months ago,” Lena said.

Mara looked up sharply.

“Why?”

“Because he thought I was the only person who would read them without immediately trying to fix him.”

That answer landed harder than Lena probably intended.

Daniel had always made people want to rescue him.

Sometimes because he needed help.

Sometimes because he looked like he needed help even when what he really needed was space.

Mara looked at the notes.

“What are these?”

“Questions.”

“About?”

Lena hesitated.

“About himself.”

The room became quieter.

Daniel’s search for the truth about his father had never been simple. After learning that Thomas Ellison was his biological father, Daniel had spent months trying to understand why the truth had been hidden from him for so long.
