Chương 8

“Notice what?”

“I don’t know.”

Lily finally let him take the phone.

Before he could wake the screen, Vanessa spoke from the other side of the door.

Her voice was no longer angry.

“Daniel, whatever Lily has on that phone, you need to listen to all of it before you decide what you think it means.”

Daniel looked at the deadbolt.

Vanessa continued.

“And when you do, ask yourself why an eight-year-old was recording conversations in our house before I ever touched her.”

Nobody in the living room moved.

Daniel could hear Vanessa breathing on the other side of the door.

He looked down at Rachel’s old phone, then at Lily.

“Before she touched you?”

Lily’s face tightened.

“I recorded her because she said things.”

“What things?”

“The things you heard.”

“That isn’t what she means.”

“I don’t know what she means.”

Caroline came down the remaining stairs.

“Daniel, don’t question Lily about this right now.”

He turned on her.

“She just told me something that doesn’t make sense.”

“It may make sense once we establish the timeline.”

“Then establish it.”

“Not like this.”

Vanessa knocked once, softly.

“Dan.”

Mara stepped toward the door.

“You need to leave.”

“I need to speak to my husband.”

“You need to leave my property.”

“I’m not talking to you, Mara.”

“No, you’re standing on my porch, so unfortunately you are.”

Aaron moved closer without interfering.

Daniel stared at the phone.

There were eleven recordings.

He had listened to five.

He opened the list again and scrolled to the bottom.

The final file was thirty-seven minutes long.

The one before it had been recorded three days earlier.

Daniel touched the date.

“When did Vanessa first hurt you?”

Caroline said his name sharply.

Lily answered anyway.

“I don’t know.”

“Before these recordings?”

“I don’t know.”

“Daniel.”

He ignored Caroline.

“Was she hurting you before you took your mom’s phone?”

Lily began twisting the cord from the little brass key around one finger.

“Sometimes she squeezed me.”

“When?”

“When she got mad.”

“How long ago?”

“I don’t know.”

Her voice rose.

“Kids don’t know dates like that.”

Daniel stopped.

She was right.

The fact that she had to tell him made shame crawl hotly up his neck.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily wiped her nose on her sleeve.

“Can I go upstairs?”

Caroline looked at her.

“Of course.”

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

Lily hurried up.

Daniel waited until the bedroom door closed.

Then he turned to Caroline.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

“A great deal, because I’m still determining what happened.”

“She said something to you upstairs.”

“She did.”

“About the recordings?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Caroline glanced toward Aaron.

“Lily described a pattern of verbal intimidation and physical handling that she says became worse over the summer.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“What does physical handling mean?”

“Grabbing her arms, pulling her by clothing, pushing her against a wall on at least one occasion.”

Mara covered her mouth.

Daniel looked at the floor.

Caroline continued before he could ask another question.

“She also described being made to stand in the laundry room for extended periods as punishment.”

“What?”

Daniel looked up.

“Our laundry room?”

“That’s what she said.”

“It’s barely a room.”

“I understand.”

“It gets hot in there.”

Caroline did not respond.

Daniel pictured the narrow space beside the garage, the dryer, the utility sink, the wire shelf where Vanessa kept detergent pods in a glass jar because she disliked commercial packaging.

He had walked through that room hundreds of times.

“How long?”

“She couldn’t reliably estimate.”

“Five minutes?”

“Daniel.”

“An hour?”

“I’m not going to turn her account into something more precise than she gave me.”

Vanessa knocked again.

“Daniel, please.”

He crossed the room before Aaron could stop him and opened the door.

Vanessa stood beneath the porch light with her arms folded against the evening chill.

She had put on shoes now, white sneakers without socks, and Daniel found himself absurdly wondering whether she had driven all the way to Mara’s with bare ankles because she had left the house in a hurry.

Her eyes moved past him.

She saw Caroline.

Something in her face collapsed.

Not guilt.

Recognition.

“You called them.”

Daniel shook his head.

“The school did.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Of course.”

Caroline approached the doorway.

“Vanessa Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“I’m Caroline Beck with county child protective services.”

“I can see the badge.”

“I’d like to speak with you.”

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Did Lily tell you what she did?”

His anger sharpened instantly.

“What she did?”

“Yes.”

“She’s eight.”

“I know how old she is.”

“Then choose your next sentence very carefully.”

Vanessa flinched.

Mara appeared behind Caroline.

“Get off my porch.”

“Mara, stay out of it.”

“Try saying that again.”

Aaron stepped between them.

“Everybody needs to lower the temperature.”

Vanessa laughed weakly.

“You think I came here to fight?”

“I don’t know why you came here,” Daniel said.

“I came because you took Lily and disappeared.”

“I texted you that she was safe.”

“You wouldn’t tell me where.”

“Because she asked me not to.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“And that didn’t concern you?”

“Everything concerns me right now.”

“It should.”

Caroline said, “Vanessa, I can speak with you here or arrange another location.”

Vanessa barely acknowledged her.

“She has been recording us for weeks, Daniel.”

“I know.”

“Did she tell you why?”

“She was afraid nobody would believe her.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

Mara made a disgusted sound.

Vanessa looked at her.

“You have hated me since the wedding.”

“I disliked you before the wedding.”

“Mara.”

Daniel’s voice silenced them both.

He held up Rachel’s phone.

“What is the last recording?”

Vanessa stared at it.

For the first time, Daniel saw genuine fear.

“Where did she get that?”

“Answer me.”

“That was Rachel’s.”

“I know whose phone it was.”

“You told me it didn’t work.”

“Apparently it does.”

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

“Did Lily listen to it?”

“She says she heard the beginning.”

May you like

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

Daniel stepped onto the porch and pulled the door almost closed behind him.
