Virginia Redistricting Map Blocked After Democrats' Actions

RICHMOND, Virginia — April 21, 2026

A Virginia judge has halted an attempt by Democrats to redraw congressional maps mid-decade, which aimed to secure more House seats.

Tazewell County Circuit Court Judge Jack Hurley ruled that the Democrat-supported constitutional amendment, which was passed in a special session and quickly presented to voters, was “void ab initio” (invalid from the very beginning). He prevented the certification of election results, issued a permanent injunction, and stopped the implementation of new maps that would have redrawn districts to favor Democrats in 10 out of 11 congressional seats.

The left attempted various tactics, including misleading ballot language, violating the state constitution's requirement for amendments to pass two separate legislative sessions with a general election in between, and rushing the vote without proper 90-day notice. They sought to bypass the usual once-a-decade redistricting process to gain power.
