Usha Vance Discusses Her Surprising Choice to Have a Fourth Child: "I Knew I'd Be Happy Either Way"
In a heartfelt and candid interview, Usha Vance, the Second Lady of the United States, reveals the surprising decision to expand her family with a fourth child — a choice that came with much persuasion from her husband, Vice President JD Vance. Despite feeling content with three children, Usha shares how she was swayed by JD’s playful yet persuasive words, leading to a new chapter in their family journey.
The couple, who have already raised three children—sons Ewan (8) and Vivek (6) and daughter Mirabel (4)—announced earlier this year that they are expecting their fourth child. The new addition, a baby boy, is due in late July 2026. This will make the Vances the first vice presidential family since 1870 to welcome a child while in office, creating a new milestone in U.S. political history.

When JD first mentioned the idea of having a fourth child, Usha admits she wasn’t completely sold on the idea. “We had our daughter, and I thought our family was complete,” she explained, adding that it took time for her to come around to the idea. “But as time passed, I realized I was feeling more and more excited about the possibility.”
JD, known for his charm and determination, was able to convince Usha with his witty persuasion. At a campaign event in Michigan, JD jokingly recounted how he had “won” both the Vice Presidency and a fourth child. “I said, ‘Honey, I really want to have a fourth kid,’” JD recalled. “And she said, ‘Well, you can become vice president or you can have a fourth baby.’ But, ladies and gentlemen, I am persuasive. I got both.”

Usha laughed at the memory, acknowledging that while she had always kept the door open for more children, JD had a unique way of making things happen. “In a manner of speaking, he persuaded me,” she said, clearly enjoying the playful banter.
Reflecting on her journey, Usha shared that while she initially thought three children was the perfect number, she had never completely ruled out the idea of a fourth. “I grew up in a family of two and thought that was great. But when I had two kids, I didn’t feel quite done,” Usha admitted. “Then we had Mirabel, and our family felt complete. But as time passed, I realized if there was a chance to have another, I should take it.”
For Usha, the joy of welcoming a new baby into their family is undeniable. “I knew I’d be happy with three kids, and I knew I’d be happy with four. And here we are,” she said with a smile.
