Update on Obama's Presidential Library: Design and Costs Draw Criticism
The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago is set to open to the public next month, over a decade after initial plans began for the facility, which will serve as the presidential library and museum for former President Barack Obama. The project has sparked considerable public discussion, particularly regarding its architectural design, development expenses, and related merchandise.
The building’s exterior has been widely criticized online and in media commentary as unconventional, often described as a “gray blob.” Online memes have likened its appearance to various objects and vehicles from the Star Wars film franchise. On May 4, commonly known as “Star Wars Day,” Obama released promotional videos featuring actor Mark Hamill to highlight the center’s upcoming opening. Observers noted that the promotional campaign received mixed reactions and additional online mockery.
Architects Billie Tsien and Tod Williams, who designed the center, have publicly confirmed Obama’s deep involvement in the creative process. They described the final design as “very much a product of his vision as well as ours,” mentioning that the former president repeatedly urged them to make the structure as “bold” as possible. One architect recalled Obama marking directly on preliminary drawings to indicate areas where he felt the design lacked sufficient boldness, stating, “He wanted us to do something that we had not done before, and that is hard. He didn’t let it rest.”
The center is intended to symbolize four hands coming together in unity, though many viewers have reported that this intended symbolism is not immediately clear when viewing the structure. Excerpts from Obama’s speeches are displayed on the exterior, but critics have pointed out that the text is difficult to read from a distance. The project has also faced local protests and significant delays during its development phase.
Merchandise planned for sale at the center has drawn further criticism. Items include apparel and a pin described by the Obama Foundation as representing “the intersection of bold design and global leadership,” with proceeds benefiting the foundation’s programs. Priced at $30, the pin has been compared by social media users to chewed gum, a pregnancy test, an eraser, or a blob of toothpaste, leading to widespread online ridicule.
The center’s estimated cost has increased from an initial projection of $500 million to approximately $850 million. Supporters of the project view it as a lasting tribute to the legacy of the nation’s first African American president and a venue for education and community engagement. Detractors argue that the design, expense, and timeline reflect poorly on the endeavor and represent an inefficient use of resources.
The controversy surrounding the Obama Presidential Center occurs amid broader national debates over the role, cost, and aesthetic standards of presidential libraries and centers. As the opening approaches, public reaction continues to highlight deep partisan and cultural divisions over how recent presidential legacies are commemorated in physical form. The facility’s final reception will likely depend on visitor experiences once it opens, as well as ongoing commentary from both supporters and critics.
