U.S. Supreme Court Issues 7-2 Ruling in Closely Watched Case, Benefiting Veterans

The case focused on retired Army Captain James Rudisill, currently an FBI agent, who served both before and after the 9/11 attacks, making him eligible for benefits under two different versions of the GI Bill. The VA had incorrectly informed him that using his post-9/11 benefits meant he would lose his pre-9/11 benefits—a decision that prevented him from pursuing his goal of attending Yale Divinity School to become a military chaplain.
The Supreme Court rejected the VA’s stance, ruling that veterans who earned benefits under both programs are entitled to use them without unfair penalties. Navy veteran and veterans’ rights advocate Tommy Marquez described the decision as transformative: “This could have a massive positive effect on America’s veterans, our communities, and our nation for years to come.”
Marquez, who served in Naval Special Warfare and later used his own GI Bill benefits to transition into public service, highlighted that the ruling will affect approximately 1.7 million veterans who accumulated credits under both the Montgomery and Post-9/11 GI Bills. He characterized it as expanding opportunities for nearly two million veterans, enabling them to combine their military experience with higher education, skilled training, or technical school to strengthen American communities and the economy.
This ruling is another example of President Donald J. Trump’s dedication to supporting our veterans—the men and women who sacrificed for our freedom. While radical Democrats spent years using government against veterans and prioritizing illegal aliens, President Trump is restoring honor, achieving results, and ensuring that those who served this nation receive the benefits they rightfully earned.
The three liberal justices dissented, as anticipated, but the strong 7-2 majority sent a clear message: veterans come first. The Court recognized that the VA had improperly restricted benefits that Congress intended to provide.
President Trump has consistently supported our military and veterans. From reforming the VA to providing historic funding and accountability, his administration continues to prioritize those who defended America. This Supreme Court decision is a direct victory for that America First approach.
The radical left can continue their attacks on our military and veterans, but the American people see the difference: under Trump, veterans succeed; under Democrats, they are often overlooked or used as political tools.
This ruling is not just about one veteran—it is about honoring the service of millions. It strengthens our communities, boosts our economy, and reaffirms that America keeps its promises to those who defend it.
President Trump’s leadership is delivering real victories for veterans every single day. The era of bureaucratic delays and unfair rules is ending. Our heroes deserve nothing less.
