Squad Democrat Criticized for Trip to Cuba, Discussing Oil Delivery; Trump Expresses Anger

Representative Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat from Washington and a prominent member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, has faced strong criticism from the Trump administration after she confirmed discussing methods to supply oil to Cuba during a recent congressional delegation visit to the island nation.

During a public briefing in Seattle, Jayapal characterized the severe fuel shortages in Cuba as “a crisis beyond imagination” and stated that she had engaged in conversations with ambassadors from Mexico and other countries to explore solutions for providing oil to the communist government. She framed these discussions as part of her congressional oversight responsibility to assess the impact of U.S. foreign policy on the Cuban people.

Jayapal mentioned that she met with Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, senior government officials, political dissidents, civil society groups, and foreign diplomats during her visit last month. She defended her actions as “literally our right and responsibility” as members of Congress.

The White House responded forcefully. Spokesperson Olivia Wales released a statement calling Jayapal’s conduct “shameful” and accusing her of suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” Wales stated that Democrats continue to show they are the “America Last party” by undermining U.S. sanctions and assisting a “failed, communist regime.”

The controversy revolves around long-standing U.S. sanctions against Cuba, which President Trump has recently tightened. Jayapal’s comments have sparked widespread debate over the appropriate role of lawmakers in foreign policy, with critics arguing that members of Congress should not actively work to circumvent executive-branch sanctions.

Representative Brandon Gill, a Republican from Texas, condemned the remarks, asking, “Who do we represent?! Do we represent the interests of the American people, or do we represent the interests of hostile foreign regimes like Cuba?” Gill described Cuba as an “evil communist regime” that tortures its own people and serves as a hub for U.S. adversaries, including Russia.

A video of Jayapal’s briefing quickly circulated on social media, leading to strong reactions from conservative commentators. Some accounts labeled her actions as potentially constituting a federal felony or even treason, citing the provision of “aid and comfort” to an enemy nation. Calls have increased for the Department of Justice to review the matter.

Jayapal has not issued a direct response to the White House criticism. Her office has emphasized that the delegation trip included meetings with dissidents and civil society groups and was intended to provide a balanced assessment of U.S. policy.

The incident highlights ongoing partisan divisions over U.S. policy toward Cuba.
