Shots Fired Near White House; J.D. Vance Put in Vehicle, Secret Service Returns Fire
A young person was injured in the incident and transported to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
The White House was temporarily locked down before being declared clear. The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the situation and advised people to stay away from the area as roads remained closed.
The shooting occurred on the National Mall, approximately one mile from the White House. The area was quickly secured.
This event follows just over a week after the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting involving Cole Allen. Allen is accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump.
Allen made his initial court appearance last week. Prosecutors stated he entered the Washington Hilton armed with multiple weapons.
He is charged with attempting to assassinate the president. Further charges are anticipated as the investigation progresses.
Allen traveled by train from California to Washington. He checked into the Hilton and stayed there before the incident.
When apprehended, he possessed a 12-gauge shotgun and a .38-caliber pistol. He had purchased these weapons in California in previous years.
Allen sent a manifesto to family members outlining his intention to target President Trump and Cabinet officials. He criticized Trump and apologized to his family.
These recent events have increased security concerns in Washington. No additional details regarding the suspect in Monday's shooting have been released yet.
