Rolls-Royce Secretly Upgraded the Gripen Jet, Catching NATO Off Guard
Rolls-Royce Just Changed the Gripen Jet in Secret — NATO Wasn’t Ready for This
OTTAWA — The United States has warned Canada against canceling its planned purchase of the F-35 Lightning II, amid rising trade tensions linked to Donald Trump. But a quiet transformation beneath the surface of an alternative fighter jet has suddenly changed the calculus — and NATO wasn’t ready for it.
Canada, under Prime Minister Mark Carney, is actively reviewing its order of 88 F-35s, opening the door to alternatives like Sweden’s Saab Gripen. The move has drawn sharp criticism from Washington, which sees the potential cancellation as both a strategic and commercial blow.
But the Gripen — once viewed as a lightweight underdog in the world of advanced fighter aircraft — has gained serious attention after a series of major upgrades involving the British engineering giant Rolls-Royce. The improvements, developed largely in secret, have transformed the jet in ways that few outside a small circle of defense insiders anticipated.

The upgrades are substantial. According to documents obtained by defense analysts, Rolls-Royce has significantly reduced the Gripen’s heat signature, making it harder to detect by infrared sensors. Low-altitude performance has been enhanced. Engine controls are now smarter, adapting in real time to combat conditions.
Most importantly, reliability in extreme conditions — including the bitter cold of the Arctic — has improved dramatically. For Canada, which operates in some of the harshest environments on Earth, that reliability is not a luxury. It is a necessity.
Together, these improvements have made the Gripen more survivable, efficient, and adaptable than any previous version. The jet that was once dismissed as “not in the same league” as the F-35 is now being reassessed by air forces across the globe.
This shift has caught NATO off guard. The alliance has long structured its air power planning around the assumption that the F-35 would be the dominant Western fighter for decades. The emergence of a credible, lower-cost, highly capable alternative challenges that assumption at a delicate moment.
The Gripen offers strong electronic warfare capabilities, the ability to operate from highways and damaged runways, and significantly lower operating costs compared to the F-35. For nations watching their defense budgets, these are not minor considerations.

Switzerland, which has also been considering its fighter options, has raised concerns about the F-35’s rising costs, limited operational control, and dependence on U.S. software and logistics. Those concerns are now echoing in Ottawa.
“The F-35 is a remarkable aircraft,” said one Canadian defense analyst. “But it comes with remarkable strings attached. The United States controls the software, the upgrades, the spare parts, and in some cases, the permission to fly certain missions. That is not sovereignty. That is dependency.”
The warning from Washington has been firm but not yet public. Behind closed doors, U.S. officials have reportedly told their Canadian counterparts that canceling the F-35 order would have “consequences” beyond the immediate contract — affecting intelligence sharing, joint exercises, and future defense cooperation.
But the political winds in Canada are shifting. Prime Minister Carney, who has emerged as a more independent voice on defense and trade matters, has not backed down. His government is conducting a full review of the F-35 purchase, examining costs, timelines, and operational requirements.

The Gripen’s new Rolls-Royce upgrades have given Carney’s team a credible alternative to present to skeptical allies. “This is not about abandoning the United States,” one official said. “This is about ensuring that Canada has the ability to defend itself on its own terms.”
For Saab and Rolls-Royce, the moment is an opportunity. The Gripen has long struggled to compete with American offerings, despite being an excellent aircraft. The combination of trade tensions, F-35 delays, and now significant performance upgrades has opened a window.
For NATO, the implications are broader than Canada. If a major ally chooses a non-American fighter for its next-generation fleet, other nations may follow. The F-35’s near-monopoly on Western air power could begin to erode.
As the debate intensifies, the question facing Ottawa is no longer just about buying jets. It is about balancing cost, control, and national security in a rapidly changing defense landscape. And the answer may determine not just Canada’s air force, but the future of transatlantic defense cooperation.
The Gripen, once overlooked, is no longer invisible. Rolls-Royce saw to that. And now, NATO is playing catch-up.
