President Trump Achieves Significant Federal Workforce Reduction, Drawing Strong Reactions
Washington D.C. – President Donald J. Trump is delivering exactly what he promised: a leaner, more efficient federal government that puts American taxpayers first.
New data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the federal civilian workforce has shrunk by approximately 355,000 employees — an 11.8% reduction — since President Trump took office. The total now stands at around 2,683,000, the lowest level since 1966. Preliminary March figures suggest the number could drop even further to about 2,665,000.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) captured the mood perfectly with a simple post on X: “I voted for this. Did you?”
This is not random attrition. It is the direct result of President Trump’s aggressive restructuring efforts, including the work of the Department of Government Efficiency. Layoffs have hit several key agencies hard: nearly half the Department of Education’s workforce is being reduced as Secretary Linda McMahon moves to eliminate the agency entirely, and the IRS has already shed more than 26,000 employees with plans to shrink it to under 60,000 — down from over 100,000 under the previous administration.
The administration has also targeted wasteful contracts, canceling or reducing nearly 100 deals worth more than $5 billion, including consulting and strategic planning projects across the Pentagon and Commerce Department. An additional $29 million was saved by ending another bloated consulting contract.
For decades, the federal civilian workforce hovered stubbornly around 2.7 million, growing bloated and inefficient. Even during the Clinton-era cuts in the 1990s, the workforce stabilized at similar levels. Under President Trump, real, sustained reduction is happening — proving once again that he keeps his promises.
Radical Democrats are in full panic mode. They spent years building a massive administrative state that served their political interests, not the American people. Now that President Trump is shrinking it, they scream about “chaos” and “cruelty.” The truth is simple: every unnecessary bureaucrat removed means less waste, less regulation, and more money left in the pockets of working Americans.
