Part 2: "The Woman on the Path"

“Wait!” the woman in black shouted, her voice breaking as she ran from the table.

The woman in gray stopped.

For one long second, neither of them moved.

The little boy stood behind them, crying silently, clutching the jeweled clip in both hands like it was the only thing holding him together.

The woman in black slowed as she got closer. Her face had changed completely now. The anger was gone. So was the distance. All that remained was fear.

“Is it really you?” she whispered.

The woman in gray looked older than she should have, tired in a way that came from years of hiding. Her eyes filled immediately, but she didn’t step back this time.

“Yes,” she said softly.

The woman in black covered her mouth. “We buried you.”

“I know.”

The boy looked between them, confused and trembling. “Mom…”

That one word shattered everything.

The woman in black turned toward him so fast her breath caught. Then she looked back at the woman in gray, already knowing the answer but needing to hear it anyway.

“He’s yours?” she asked.

The woman in gray nodded through tears. “He’s my son.”

The elegant woman’s knees nearly gave out. “Why didn’t you come to me?”

The answer came with a broken breath.
