The photograph displayed a young woman cradling a newborn baby.
On its reverse side were three words:
He deserves truth.
The man’s wife covered her mouth, but it was too late.
The older woman gazed at her son with tears in her eyes.
“She visited here once,” she stated. “With your child in her arms. Someone instructed security to remove her before I could reach the door.”
The man slowly turned towards his wife.
Her silence provided all the answers.
For two decades, he had believed love had betrayed him.
But love had merely been kept away.
The old woman touched the vacant chair.
“I reserved this seat for your daughter,” she whispered. “Because one day, she will occupy it.”
Then the restaurant doors opened.
A young woman stood there, holding the identical photograph in her hand.
And for the first time, the vacant chair was no longer empty.
