She simply looked at him—calm, steady, as if she had anticipated that question.
“My name?” she repeated softly.
He nodded, his grip tightening on the piece of bread. His heart was now pounding, louder than the traffic, louder than everything else.
The girl offered a small, almost timid smile.
“My mama says my name is Liana.”
The world seemed to pause.
The man’s face lost all color. His hand shook as the bread nearly slipped from his grasp.
“Liana…” he whispered.
That name was more than just a name.
It was a memory.
A promise.
A life he had lost.
His eyes now scrutinized her face more closely—the shape of her eyes, the softness of her voice, the strange familiarity that suddenly made terrifying sense.
“Your mother…” he said, struggling to breathe. “Where is she?”
The girl pointed down the street with her small hand.
“She works there,” she said. “She told me to wait, but… you looked sad.”
The man slowly rose, his legs unsteady, his eyes fixed on her.
Hope and fear clashed within him.
“Take me to her,” he said quietly.
The girl nodded and reached for his hand without hesitation.
