She simply looked at him—calm and steady, as if she had anticipated that question.

“My name?” she repeated softly.

He nodded, his grip firming on the piece of bread. His heart was now beating loudly, louder than the traffic, louder than everything else.

The girl offered a small, almost timid smile.

“My mama says my name is Liana.”

The world seemed to pause.

The man’s face lost all color. His hand shook, and the bread nearly slipped from his grasp.

“Liana…” he whispered.
