Part 2: The Assistant Who Couldn't Lie

The rich man stared at the bottle in his assistant’s hand as if the hospital room had suddenly become hostile.

The monitor continued to beep.

The old man struggled to breathe.

The nurse was the first to act.

She took the correct pills, checked the label, and called for help. The intern finally found his courage and ran to get the doctor.

The assistant moved backward toward the door.

“I was told to switch them,” he whispered.

The rich man’s face turned pale.

“By whom?”

The assistant looked at the elderly man in the bed, then at the rich man.

His voice cracked.

“Your brother.”

The room became silent and still.

The nurse’s eyes widened with horror.

The rich man slowly turned toward the hallway, where his brother had been standing moments earlier, pretending to cry for the cameras.

The elderly patient’s weak hand moved on the blanket.

The nurse leaned in close.
