Ilhan Omar's "Deport Me" Comment Prompts Trump's Response
Washington D.C. — President Donald Trump has renewed his criticism of Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, following her recent comments about deportation and U.S. citizenship. Trump made the remarks aboard Air Force One while addressing reporters.
Trump referenced longstanding allegations that Omar entered the United States through a fraudulent marriage to her brother. “She supposedly came into our country by marrying her brother,” he said. “If that’s true, she shouldn’t be a congresswoman, and we should throw her the hell out of the country.”
The comments follow an earlier exchange in which Omar stated during an October appearance that she was not concerned about losing her citizenship or being deported. “I have no worry, I don’t know how they’d take away my citizenship and like deport me,” Omar said. “But I don’t even know why that’s such a scary threat. I’m not the 8-year-old who escaped war anymore. I’m grown, my kids are grown. I could go live wherever I want.”
Trump also broadened his remarks to address Somali immigration more generally. “Somalis have caused us a lot of trouble, and they cost us a lot of money,” he said. “What the hell are we paying Somalia for? We have Ilhan Omar who does nothing but complain about our Constitution and our country! We’re not taking their people anymore — in fact, we’re sending them back.”
Omar, who was born in Somalia, fled the country’s civil war in 1991 with her family. They spent several years in a Kenyan refugee camp before resettling in the United States. She was elected to Congress in 2018, becoming one of the first Somali-American members of the House of Representatives.
The White House has indicated it stands by the president’s statements. A senior aide described them as a reminder that “America’s generosity should never be repaid with contempt.”
Omar has previously pushed back against Trump’s comments, calling him a “lying buffoon” and disputing claims about Somalia’s president refusing to accept her return. The renewed exchange highlights ongoing tensions over immigration policy and the integration of refugee communities.
The controversy comes amid broader debates about vetting processes for immigrants and the costs associated with certain refugee resettlement programs. No formal legal action regarding Omar’s citizenship has been announced.
