Hakeem Jeffries Faces Setback After Election Landslide
Democratic lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, held a private meeting over the weekend to discuss the Virginia Supreme Court’s ruling that overturned the state’s newly drawn congressional map. The 4-3 decision, issued Friday, invalidated a voter-approved constitutional amendment that had authorized mid-decade redistricting, dealing a significant setback to Democratic efforts to gain seats in the 2026 midterm elections.
The court ruled that the Democratic-controlled legislature had presented the constitutional amendment to voters in an “unprecedented manner,” rendering the referendum null and void. Justice D. Arthur Kelsey, writing for the majority, stated that the violation “irreparably undermines the integrity of the resulting referendum vote.”
The ruling is expected to preserve or restore several Republican-held districts in Virginia, limiting Democratic gains in a state where the new map had been projected to favor the party in 10 out of 11 congressional districts.
According to sources familiar with the private Democratic call, some participants floated an “audacious and possibly far-fetched idea” — replacing the entire state Supreme Court in an attempt to revive the rejected map. Journalist Reid J. Epstein reported that the proposal drew mixed reactions, and it was unclear whether it would be legally viable or supported by Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger and Democrats in the state legislature.
The group did not reach a final decision on a course of action. Jeffries and other members of Congress agreed to consult with lawyers to determine the most prudent next steps. Democratic leaders in Virginia, including House Speaker Don Scott and Attorney General Jay Jones, have already filed a motion seeking to pause the state court’s ruling while pursuing an emergency appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The Virginia case is part of a broader national redistricting battle. Republicans have secured net gains through completed maps in states including Florida, Texas, Ohio, North Carolina, and Missouri. Democrats have made gains in California and Utah, but the overall trajectory currently favors Republicans, with analysts projecting potential net gains of up to 18 seats for the GOP compared to roughly six for Democrats.
The Virginia Supreme Court decision, combined with the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling narrowing key provisions of the Voting Rights Act regarding race-based districting, is expected to strengthen Republican advantages heading into the 2026 midterms. Democrats had hoped the new Virginia map would help offset Republican-led redistricting efforts in other states.
The private meeting reflected what one source described as “desperation and fury” within the Democratic caucus. While some lawmakers discussed alternative strategies — such as attempting to flip two or three Republican-held seats under the existing map or pursuing a “bank-shot” proposal to redraw lines anyway — no consensus was reached.
The developments underscore the high stakes of redistricting in a narrowly divided House. Both parties are aggressively pursuing map changes wherever political control and court rulings allow, leading to an unusually active mid-decade redistricting cycle.
As the situation evolves, Democrats are expected to continue legal challenges while Republicans celebrate the preservation of their seats in Virginia. The outcome of any appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court remains uncertain, but legal experts describe it as a long-shot bid.
