First Democrat Resigns Amid Epstein Fallout

Washington D.C. — Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers is stepping down from his teaching positions at Harvard University. The resignation comes as renewed scrutiny intensifies over his past ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Harvard announced that Summers will resign from his faculty positions at the end of the academic year and relinquish his University Professorship. Summers described the decision as difficult but did not publicly cite a specific reason.
The timing coincides with heightened attention following the release of Justice Department documents by House lawmakers. The materials include emails showing Summers remained in contact with Epstein up until Epstein’s 2019 arrest, years after Epstein’s 2008 guilty plea.
The correspondence referenced political matters and personal relationships. One email showed Summers asking Epstein for advice about pursuing a romantic relationship with a woman he had described as a mentee. Epstein responded that he was a “pretty good wing man.”
Previously disclosed flight logs show Summers and his wife visited Epstein’s private island, Little Saint James, in December 2005 while Summers was president of Harvard. A spokesperson previously defended the visit as a brief stop during their honeymoon before Epstein’s first arrest.
Harvard confirmed the resignation is connected to the ongoing review of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein recently released by the government. Summers has been on leave from Harvard since November.
Summers served as Treasury Secretary under former President Bill Clinton and as director of the National Economic Council under President Barack Obama. He has been an influential voice on fiscal and monetary policy.
His ties to Epstein have been examined before. In 2021, reports indicated Epstein had donated to Harvard and that Summers met with him multiple times after the 2008 conviction. Summers later expressed regret for the association.
The renewed attention follows broader congressional efforts to review Epstein-related records. Epstein died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
Summers has not issued a detailed public statement on the newly released emails. Harvard said it will continue reviewing the documents.
